About This Cause
Ten years ago, we were a group of friends who got together and decide to do something rewarding for the community. Each of us was persistently volunteering our time and effort to assist a small group of Vietnamese immigrants. We showed them how to fill out their citizenship application and helped them improve their English-speaking skills. It was immensely gratifying to see these individuals passed their US citizenship and gained a place in the society to voice their opinions. For that reason, we decided to incorporate our association on 2010 and called ourselves, the “Vietnamese American Voters of Northern California.” We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated volunteers; a genial team of skilled and diligent professionals. We are doctors, accountants, chemist, dentist, IT specialist, pharmacist, and so forth. We’re quite known in the Vietnamese community, as we participated in many community activities; moreover, worked side by side with a few private entities, public sectors, and organizations on several programs such as: ICAN’s “Census Bureau 2010 Outreach;” PG&E’s “How to Save Energy” event in 2011; “California Breather’s Health Awareness/Education Program for Smokers,” and many more. Back on 2011, our organization conducted a huge event at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds called, “Mid- Autumn Celebration.” Over 3,000 Vietnamese-American people participated in this festivity. The event was advertised through broadcasting on local Vietnamese major radio and television stations and advertised in newspapers. Focal purpose of this gathering was to have people voice their opinions by means of exercising their rights to vote. We had 2 voter registration booths in the high traffic areas and a few business booths from major companies in San Jose. Furthermore, our event guest speakers were comprised of Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisor Dave Cortese, Councilman Kansen Chu, Councilmember Rose Herrera, and Candidate Jimmy Nguyen. In addition to this, we offered essay scholarships to youth and young-adults. The essay topic title was “What would you contribute to the community after college?” We chose this topic because we’re eager to prepare young people to vote, be a positive role model, and get them involved in their community, as we know this will improve their lives and everyone else’s. For over a decade, our team remain driven and passionate to do even more in fostering eligible voters embrace their civic duties and exercise their rights as citizens of the United States. Our project purpose for this program is to educate and motivate underrepresented communities to “Get Out to Vote;" cast their votes, cast their ballots in the impending election. Consequently, to explain the importance of voting and how public opinion can bring about positive change and promote good quality of life in the community.
