Mission Statement
To develop and use new models of global collaboration to stop and prevent serious human rights abuses and ensure governments fulfil their responsibility to protect civilians from armed conflict.
About This Cause
Established in 2004, Crisis Action is an award-winning NGO with a proven track record of strengthening the global human rights movement with high-impact, low-ego solutions, earning it the reputation as one of “the most effective organizations” that people have never heard of. Over 15 exciting years, Crisis Action has worked behind the scenes to convene powerful collective action to change high-level policy in over 30 different war zones. With 40 staff in 9 countries, Crisis Action coordinates hundreds of human rights and humanitarian groups globally, including across the Middle East and Africa, protecting people who through no fault of their own are caught up in some of the world’s deadliest conflicts (presently in Syria, Yemen and South Sudan). Its unusual model recognizes that complex problems cannot be resolved by any single organization acting alone. At a time when basic human rights are being decimated at unprecedented speed, coordinated, collaborative approaches and networks are essential, making Crisis Action’s model more relevant than ever. From empowering inspirational activists to push back against closing civic space in Sudan, to working with brave Russian journalists to tell stories about war crimes in Syria that their government wanted to suppress, much of what Crisis Action does is about enabling amazing individuals to have maximum impact. At the same time, Crisis Action also helps change the system and uphold the rule of law: from highlighting the role of the finance sector in perpetuating the conflict in South Sudan, to working with Parliaments and Congress in the UK, France, and the US to hold governments to account. Crisis Action has a presence in Addis, Beirut, Berlin, Brussels, London, Nairobi, New York, Paris, Pretoria and Washington DC. Its innovative model of conflict prevention has been recognized by the 2012 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions and the 2013 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship. The Ford Foundation also recognized it as one of 7 NGOs to be reshaping the global human rights movement.
