Mission Statement

The Third Coast International Audio Festival (TCIAF) brings exceptional audio documentaries of all styles to audiences worldwide, while creatively supporting producers engaged in contemporary audio culture and inspiring the next generation of listeners and makers.

About This Cause

Based in Chicago, the TCIAF scours the globe for remarkable documentaries, and presents them to audiences on the airwaves, online and at public listening events. These stories explore the human experience, and encourage thoughtful reflection, dialogue and appreciation of audio as an art form. With equal diligence, the TCIAF supports producers creating this vital work and fosters the emerging generation of makers. From our weekly radio show, to our annual competition, from our plentiful listening events to our biennial conference, the TCIAF reaches tens of thousands of people each week. Re:sound Radio Program / Third Coast Podcast Hosted by award-winning radio producer Gwen Macsai, Re:sound features audio documentaries of all styles curated from around the globe. Re:sound airs twice weekly on WBEZ, Chicago, is archived at thirdcoastfestival.org and is available via the Third Coast Podcast. Listening Events The TCIAF presents public listening events in theaters, galleries and community centers in Chicago and beyond. We also present the Third Coast Filmless Festival, a public celebration of sound and story and the art of listening, every other fall. ShortDocs Challenge Hosted biennially in the spring, TCIAF’s ShortDocs Challenge invites producers and listeners alike to produce short audio stories based on a specific set of rules. The rules inspire “creativity through constraint” and give everyone a reason to try their hand at radio. Competition Each year, the Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition attracts submissions from hundreds of producers, reporters and artists around the world. A panel of highly accomplished audio producers and others working in story-rich media select the most exemplary works submitted in the categories of Best Documentary, Best News Feature, Radio Impact and Best New Artist. National Broadcast Best of the Best: The Third Coast Festival Broadcast is a two-hour program showcasing the winners of our annual TC/RHDF Competition, along with producer interviews, and highlights from the Awards Ceremony. Conference Held in Chicago every other fall, the Third Coast Conference gathers the foremost audio/radio producers from around the world to guide, inspire and engage new and veteran producers to do their best, most creative work. Website – www.thirdcoastfestival.org The TCIAF website maintains an ongoing relationship with listening audiences and producers worldwide. The site offers visitors a vast library of 1,000-plus audio works curated by TCIAF staff over the past 12 years, our complete archive of ShortDocs Challenge submissions, producer interviews and more.
