Mission Statement

Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) is an evidence-based program for expectant parents that integrates mindfulness skills and practice with childbirth and parenting education. Founded in 1998 by nurse-midwife Nancy Bardacke, CNM, MA, the MBCP program is one of the first adaptations of the world-renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. In the years since its inception, thousands of expectant parents have used the inner skills learned in the MBCP program to help them navigate the transformational processes of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the intense, joyful, and sometimes stressful experiences of being a parent. The Mindful Birthing and Parenting Foundation's (MBPF) mission is to support the global accessibility of Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) programs and approaches across all cultural, socio-economic, religious, and political orientations, influencing programs, models of care, and policies that will improve the health and wellbeing of expectant women, babies, partners, and families in the critical early years of life. The MBPF does this by providing field-leading education and resources for expectant families and high-quality, rigorous professional trainings for MBCP instructors. The MBPF is committed to contributing to the evidence-base for mindfulness practice as a whole, and MBCP in particular, through the support of rigorous scientific research and the establishment of strong ethical guidelines and training processes for all MBCP and MBCP-inspired programs.

About This Cause

The Mindful Birthing and Parenting Foundation (MBPF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Oakland, CA, which provides mindfulness-based perinatal education internationally. The MBPF's activities fall into 3 main categories: 1. Teacher Training Our intention is to continue to develop, improve, and scale the Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) professional teacher training that the MBPF already provides. We will offer professional training of the highest quality, meeting and exceeding the existing standards of professionalism and integrity that have already been developed for other mindfulness-based training programs (MBPs) throughout the world. Working with birth providers, perinatal professionals, and family support organizations, we will endeavor to offer the MBCP program with sensitivity and respect, honoring local cultures and languages. Whenever possible, we will offer training scholarships to aspiring MBCP instructors, giving emphasis to those serving under-resourced communities. 2. Research Our intention is to contribute to the evidence-base of MBCP’s efficacy for expectant parents and their families for both the near and long-term impact. We will also enhance our existing relationships with highly regarded research institutions and work to support collaborative exchanges amongst our international research community. Wherever possible, we will provide open access to MBCP publications, facilitate student research, and award grants in the spirit of scientific transparency and learning. We will also engage in a process of adaptation and development of the MBCP curriculum as new research findings emerge. 3. Communities Our commitment to this work is grounded in the intention to build a global educational movement of MBCP professionals, parents, and supporters who are dedicated to bringing greater awareness, kindness, connectedness, and caring to families worldwide, for the benefit of this generation of families and those that follow. The MBPF provides direct, online educational services to parents and professionals and is the standard-bearer for all other international MBCP training programs.
