Mission Statement
The Hockey Foundation's global mission is to empower under-served youth, promote social change, peace and prosperity, and support community development through hockey, one puck at a time. Whether it be in northern Quebec, Patagonia, Ireland, Turkey, Israel, India, or the Philippines, we've seen the incredible impact of hockey in remote/under-served regions around the world, and are working to build a coalition of support in order to continue using sport to change more and more lives every year.
About This Cause
Founding & Organizational Background The Hockey Foundation was established in 2010 by Adam Sherlip after his 2009 trip to coach hockey in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Prior to this India trip, Adam worked for the New York Islanders (NHL) and was responsible for over-seeing their children’s foundation programming, as well as operating international youth hockey tournaments and exchange programs between players in the Long Island, NY area and Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. Today, The Hockey Foundation has developed a deep relationship with youth hockey programs across India, while establishing and building new relationships in Canada, Morocco, Kenya, Argentina, Ireland, Turkey, Israel and more countries around the world. Program Highlights & Success to Date Our team’s programming and international travel experience has also prepared us for dealing with the challenge of running programs in foreign countries, and we’ve learned to rely upon our organization’s mission and values whenever we face challenging situations. Some of the highlights of The Hockey Foundation’s programming to date include: -Donating a total of ~7,000 pieces of hockey equipment to programs in need in India, Morocco, Canada and U.S. -Coaching 2,000+ under-served youth hockey players (age 3-15) in the remote Himalayan region of Ladakh, India -Enlisting over two dozen volunteer coaches, planning their itineraries and developing their coaching programs -Coaching under-served Inuit youth hockey players in the remote region of Nunavik, Quebec, Canada -Encouraging the emerging leaders within the hockey community to take on leadership roles via hockey, enlisting them as assistant coaches, naming them captain, and dedicating extra time to instill positive values -Donated 500+ books to schools in need - Promoted values of tolerance, inclusion, diversity, teamwork, accountability, resilience, and have seen the way the young hockey players of India have become motivated to pursue their own future in hockey -Provided extra support to girls’ hockey programs -Maintain long-term, long-distance relationships with many of the program leaders (youth and administrators) to ensure effective mentorship Future Growth The long-term vision of The Hockey Foundation is multi-faceted. While we are dedicated to the sustained development of our programming in India, we are also focused on growing programs in other parts of the world (including the countries mentioned above), and specifically on native communities in North America, such as the Inuit village of Puvirnituq, Quebec. Beyond straight-forward coaching & donating, we are also looking to establish cultural exchange programs via hockey for under-served/at-risk youth from in-need regions around the world, and support more local hockey charities around the world through funding and/or collaborative efforts. Personnel The Hockey Foundation has a team of dedicated, passionate volunteers that support our mission and objectives on and off the ice due to their mutual love and respect for helping people via hockey. Our business operations team is approximately 10 people, while our coaching team is around 10-15 members at any given time, with new faces joining all the time. We get contacted nearly daily with enthusiastic supporters looking to volunteer their time and experience to support communities in need via hockey.
