Mission Statement
We engage fathers, youth and families to build stronger, more vital relationships through a dynamic use of film, story, poetry and creative expression.
About This Cause
REEL FATHERS is a Santa Fe-based social profit founded in 2009 to promote a positive experience of fatherhood and family. We work with men to add meaning, depth and enjoyment to the lived experience of fatherhood. We work with youth to provide a felt understanding of personal identity and how it’s shaped by father, family, and a student’s own volition. The goal of all our work is to build caring, resilient relationships that strengthen families – the bedrock of our community. FATHERS Dad Meetups Program: Dad Meetups are monthly, informal activities for dads and kids to enjoy together. Outdoor activities might be a barbecue in a park with games, a mountain hike or picnic by a river, an adobe brick-building service project. Winter activities might be a cooking/meal sharing event led by another dad, a museum visit, a movie screening with discussion. Outcomes: The program strengthens father-child relationships through activities that are naturally bonding. It builds kinship and solidarity among dads, and gives men a fulfilling experience as a parent. YOUTH Identity in Ink Program: Identity in Ink uses poetry to engage middle and high school students in a dynamic process of self-reflection and social emotional learning centered on their identity. Special attention is paid to the role played by family and father. Three core questions frame students’ creative process: • Where do I come from? • Where am I going? • What’s a good life? Poet mentors trained in REEL FATHERS’ method create a safe, encouraging space for students to think about how their father and family members have shaped their character, aspirations, and values. Youth express in poetic writing and art images what their reflections reveal, sharing heartfelt, often difficult emotions with their teacher and peers. Outcomes: For many youth the process is cathartic. For others it brings newfound gratitude and appreciation. Students tap creative energies, build authentic voice and self-awareness. They imagine the future life they want for themselves. They build confidence, courage, and resilience. REEL FATHERS partners with numerous Santa Fe public and charter schools. These include Capital High, Santa Fe High, Monte del Sol Charter School, Ortiz Middle School, El Camino Real Academy, and The Masters Program Early College Charter High School. REEL FATHERS is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, federal tax ID #26-4664688. For more information, contact Executive Director Deborah Boldt, deborah.reelfathers@gmail.com.
