Street Lab is a nonprofit that transforms the street-level environment of New York City to improve lives, strengthen neighborhoods, and bring New Yorkers together. We partner with communities and city government to bring immediate benefits to residents while building support for long-term change. We use a pop-up approach to make this vision a reality across New York City.
About This Cause
Street Lab transforms the street-level environment of New York City to improve lives, strengthen neighborhoods, and bring New Yorkers together. We partner with communities and city government to bring immediate benefits to residents while building support for long-term change. How we work: everywhere we go is by request from communities in NYC—2000+ pop-ups in 400+ public spaces over the past decade. We pop-up with award-winning programs, innovative physical designs, and experienced staff. And we offer deep, ongoing support to local groups, providing everything they need to create new public spaces and activate existing ones, including support with permits, planning, logistics, staffing, partnerships, community engagement, photography, and evaluation. Over time, we’ve worked with 295+ community partners across New York City, and we meet each partner where they are at—providing access to our design and operational capacity, sharing exactly what each group needs to bring a vision for the street to life. 81% of our work is in underserved neighborhoods, and we focus on opportunities that bring immediate benefits to residents while building support for permanent changes to the urban landscape that communities want. We’ve established a network of over 295 community partners across New York City with over 1500 public spaces that these groups are working to improve, and we have already worked in 432 of these locations. We have award-winning programs at the ready, and new programs in development. We’re capable of custom solutions requiring design and fabrication, and we can incorporate other programming partners. We have friendly and experienced staff who are fluent in different languages and skilled at welcoming all kinds of people. And we have individual donors who support our work across the city. Cities everywhere are facing pressures that threaten their social fabric. Street Lab is pioneering new kinds of portable amenities that can serve multiple neighborhoods and bring about immediate, positive changes that make communities feel valued and connected to the city at large. In the years ahead, we want to continue to offer new programs and put kits in the hands of partners to implement locally on their own. The result will be an urban landscape transformed and a city recognized for pioneering a new approach to neighborhood improvement and building community.
