Mission Statement
The Pink Ribbon Symposium, Inc., is a non-profit organization focused on raising breast cancer awareness and education for the Northeast Florida community. Established in 2007, we have had the opportunity to reach thousands of residents affected by breast cancer. Our annual education conference, the Pink Ribbon Symposium, has given patients, family members and caregivers the opportunity to learn about important issues related to breast cancer diagnosis, prevention, treatment, survivorship, and living healthy lifestyles.
About This Cause
ABOUT: The Pink Ribbon Symposium, Inc., is a non-profit organization focused on raising breast cancer awareness and education for the Northeast Florida community. Established in 2007, we have had the opportunity to reach thousands of residents affected by breast cancer. Our annual education conference, the Pink Ribbon Symposium, has given patients, family members and caregivers the opportunity to learn about important issues related to breast cancer diagnosis, prevention, treatment, survivorship, and living healthy lifestyles. MISSION: To educate and inform the women and men of Northeast Florida of the most recent advances in breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options; to address issues of living beyond breast cancer, including increasing awareness of general good health and wellness, and to empower women and men about their healthcare options. HISTORY: Created by physicians Linda Sylvester and Cynthia Anderson of the Orange Park Cancer Center, the Pink Ribbon Symposium was inaugurated in 2007. The main event draws over 500 attendees from the community annually and hosts a large exhibitor fair in which up to 70 local and national businesses showcase their services to help cancer patients and their families. Past Keynote speakers for the Symposium have included: • Jeannie Blaylock - Founder of Buddy Check 12 & news anchor for Channel 12 • Barbara Bishop - Licensed Therapist • Tim and Donna Deegan – Founder of the Breast Cancer Marathon (the Donna Foundation) & news anchors for Channel 12 • Shannon Miller – Olympic Medal Gymnast & Founder of Shannon Miller Lifestyles • Peggy Fleming – Olympic Gold Medalist and Breast Cancer Survivor • Gwen Templeton & Roz McCoy - Comedians • Melissa Ross - Local Radio Personality from First Coast Connect • Mark Heyison - Founder/President of Men Against Breast Cancer • Noel Pomeroy - Founder of the Jacksonville Center for Sexual Health & Licensed Mental Health Counselor Over the years, other fundraising events have been hosted by Pink Ribbon Symposium, including the Pink Ribbon Symposium Survivors Celebration 5K Run/Walk (also also known as the Butterfly Fun Run/Walk), a comedy show called Hahas for Tatas, and Pink Poker Night.
