About This Cause
The communities we serve are fathers and their sons, especially African Americans, people of color, and their families throughout King County. Our neighborhood of focus is the Rainier Beach Community with 10,798 residents and 32% Black African American, 29.6% Asian (predominantly Vietnamese), 8.7% Latino/Hispanic, 5.5% Native Pacific Islander, and 6.8% two or more races. African American fathers, sons (ages 5 - 18), and their families will benefit most from our program. African-Americans are often underrepresented in civic engagement due to a lack of trust and lack of access to organized networks that influence advocacy, economic development, and community safety. Despite barriers, FAST believes that African American men, and young men, and youth are resilient and a powerful untapped source for enacting change in the community. Strong families are the foundation of a vibrant community. African-American fathers desire to be deeply engaged in the lives of their children. FAST is a 501©3 youth development organization based in Southeast Seattle centered on providing guidance, support, and nurturing to the underprivileged youth-particularly youth of color. Our work promotes lifestyle changes that support improved educational outcomes, improved health and wellness, and better decision making from our youth while also inspiring community advocacy and engagement from youth and parents alike. Studies show that children who enjoy the support of a strong father figure display better decision-making skills, are more likely to achieve academically, and do better in the workplace as adults—all of which contribute to the lowered risk of criminal justice involvement system. FAST seeks to create these bonds by supporting fathers to be present, positive, and active with their sons-building loving relationships that feature good boundaries, direct involvement, and character strength on both sides of the generational divide. We recognize the unfortunate statistics of fatherless homes in our communities and encourage all male figures/uncles, grandfathers, and coaches to join our program as mentors to their youth. Supporting strong father/son relationships has a positive impact on young men's mental and emotional health. It influences the academic and vocational function and aids in positive decision making, positioning our youth to become active and able participants in community life as they reach adulthood. Our primary focus is to prevent our children from entering the juvenile justice system. We want to empower their fathers/mentors to take ownership of their journey. This journey all begins at home. Our focus: Education, Health & Wellness and Positive Social Change To date, FAST has successfully designed several signature projects to empower, develop, and educate. Together, we enjoy activities intentionally woven into each program. With food, history lessons to remember our greatness, and dynamic workshops featuring open discussions led by professional African American leaders as facilitators on relevant topics directly affect our community. Activities: Fishing Day & Play, Empowerment Baseball Camp, Empowerment Basketball Camp, Golf Camp, Barbershop Chat Chew & Play, Walk for Change, Father and Son Overnight Camping Experience, Father and Daughter Day, and more. Programs: Next Generation Level Up – Career Readiness Program, We Are AMAZING! – Youth & My History Matters, Youth FAST Council
