Mission Statement
Whiterock Conservancy is a non-profit land trust stewarding 5,000 acres of prairie, savanna, wetland, crop land, pastures and forest along the Middle Raccoon River near Coon Rapids, Iowa. In addition to preserving and protecting the rare wild land, Whiterock practices and demonstrates sustainable agriculture and is open to the public for recreation. Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, biking or horseback riding on the trail system, canoe and kayak trips, fishing and much more. Whiterock offers tent and RV camping, modern accommodations including cottages and a house that sleeps up to 13, and a bed and breakfast in the historic Garst farmhouse where Roswell Garst hosted Nikita Khrushchev in 1959.
About This Cause
Whiterock Conservancy was formed twelve years ago to manage one of the largest land gifts in the history of Iowa generously given by the Garst family. Today it stewards 5,500 acres along the scenic Middle Raccoon River Valley near Coon Rapids, IA. The gorgeous Whiterock landscape attracts visitors from all over the state, region and nation. It is a mix of savannas, rolling pastures, native and restored prairies, wetlands, riverside bluffs, fishing ponds, crop ground, and unique historic, geologic, and archaeological sites. Whiterock's diverse habitats are the home of hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Our conservation land is actively managed to improve the condition of the rare savanna and prairie while providing visitors with opportunities to experience these landscapes and learn about their history and function. Whiterock also strives to continue the Garst legacy of innovative farming by demonstrating sustainable farming practices and providing farmers and non-farmers information on the benefits and costs of these practices. In the past two years, Whiterock Conservancy completed a state of the art 40-mile sustainable trail system that serves the needs of walkers, hikers, runners, mountain bikers, equestrians and those with mobility limitations through the use of low-powered vehicles. Added to our campgrounds, accommodations and other activities, these amenities have nearly doubled our attendance in the last year and allow visitors to get up close to nature, view sustainable agriculture practices and explore the history of the area.
