LITTLE ELM AREA FOOD BANK

LITTLE ELM, Texas, 75068-0746 United States

Mission Statement

Founded in 1984, Little Elm Area Food Bank's mission is to provide a two-week food supply to Little Elm area residents experiencing a family emergency. In addition to providing emergency food supplies, our all-volunteer organization work to educate the family in crisis about additional sources of long-term assistance at the county and state level. Our programs specifically target both hunger and food insecurity in our community.

About This Cause

Our food bank is unique in that .97 cents of every dollar goes towards getting food on the table for families in our community. We receive no direct support from any local, county, state or federal agencies. Last year, our unpaid volunteers provided over 6,500 hours in maintaining the Food Bank's operations. With the help of local churches, schools, civic groups, businesses and fundraisers, we help more than 2,500 members in our community each year. About 10% of our client base are elderly and require the support of our services throughout the year. About 80% of the families who seek our help have at least one child under the age of seventeen. Our programs target the health and welfare gap many families encounter during an emergency situation. In too many instances there is a delay between the occurrence of the emergency and when aid may be provided to our clients. Additionally, we work closely with the Community in School counselors located in many schools in the Little Elm Independent School District. Many clients with children in our local schools also participate in the federal lunch program. Another service our food bank provides is to help finance the Little Elm “Kids Eat Free” summer program which provides over 19,500 lunches to children under the age of 18 that would not otherwise receive one. On average, the cost to provide these lunches are more than $15,000 each year. Last year, the LEAFB joined forces with the Meals on Wheels program by providing monetary support to help with the transportation needs to deliver meals to the homebound elderly and disabled citizens in the Little Elm area. We have two other special initiatives where general funds are used. The Food Bank, each year, provides food baskets to those in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. These two significant programs provide enough food to ensure struggling families have food supplies during the holiday season. Each of these holiday initiatives supports approximately 450 families. These two initiatives are independent of our emergency aid program requirements. In cooperation with the Town of Little Elm, The Little Elm Independent School District, local churches and other local organizations, participation in these two programs do not exclude families in need from utilizing our other emergency aid programs. In conclusion, we measure success one family at a time. Our primary goal is to get our clients on their feet as soon as possible. Our services reduce the family hardship and empower our clients to seek solutions to their crisis. In cooperation with business leaders, clients who use our services will not have to choose between food and other necessities in a crisis situation.
