About This Cause
Project SHARE of Carlisle has remained faithful to the mission of fighting hunger since 1984. In the last 10 years alone, more than 11 million pounds of food have been distributed to our neighbors who struggle with food insecurity. Project SHARE’s core programming deals with assuring that all households in the greater Carlisle community have reliable access to nutritional food for their families. Through our monthly distribution, Project SHARE serves, on average, 950 families in need. In addition, during the other three weeks of the month, those and other families have access to an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables through Project SHARE’s Farmstand. In total, over 1,000 families receive help from Project SHARE on a monthly basis as they fight to overcome hunger and food insecurity. In tandem with the provision of nutritious foods, Project SHARE increases awareness and utilization of food through its nutrition educational programs for kids and adults that educate Clients about proper nutrition, making appropriate food choices and healthy food preparation. We also listen to Client needs and take advantage of existing community programs and services that can help families meet other financial, health and social needs. Project SHARE recognizes that in order to end hunger, efforts must extend beyond the emergency food net and begin to address the root causes of hunger. Advocacy, education, and collaboration with other organizations all play a role within Project SHARE’s mission. Project SHARE’s programs go further than simply distributing healthy food. It is by meeting those evolving needs of clients that we have our greatest impact. This is accomplished through educational programs like Kids in the Kitchen and Adult Cooking classes. It comes to life as we host the Summer Lunch and Learn program that serves about 250 at risk children during the summer. Children suffering from hunger receive weekend nutrition backpacks to help feed them over the weekend while out of school. Evolving needs are met by building stronger partnerships with other agencies in the community so our clients have a network of resources to draw upon. Sometimes it’s a simple hug and a warm smile. But it all starts with healthy, nutritious food.
