Dave's House mission is to transform lives and give hope to people with serious mental illness through creating stable homes that provide lasting recovery. Our vision is to end the housing crisis for people with serious mental illness.
About This Cause
Dave’s House is Central Florida’s leading provider of affordable permanent supportive housing for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and co-occurring disabilities. Dave’s House and Aspire Health work together to help these individuals continue to live in recovery through affordable permanent supportive housing, which is our Dave’s House homes. Residents receive ongoing mental health care, life skills development training, access to community resources, and 24/7 crisis intervention and stabilization services if needed. Many of Dave’s House residents move on to independent living. Lin and Ron Wilensky founded Dave’s House in 2008 after personally witnessing the positive impact permanent supportive housing made for Lin’s brother, Dave Jeffreys, who lived with schizophrenia. Dave’s House has developed nine single site homes in Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Fairfax, Virginia, as well as multiple Dave’s Housing First homes, providing permanent supportive housing for over 100 individuals who are living productive lives in an atmosphere of mental wellness, safety and stability. Our Residents’ Path of Progression Chronic Homelessness | The men and women we serve have been chronically homeless, at risk of being homeless or in sub-standard housing. As a result of a health crisis, they have found themselves in a place with no housing, mental health care or financial support systems. Due to their SMI, they typically cycle through hospital emergency rooms, prison and homeless shelters. Supportive Transitional Housing | Aspire Health and other behavioral health service professionals provide individuals with a stable transitional home and mental health care services that is usually limited to two years. Permanent Supportive Housing | Individuals graduate to permanent supportive housing through Dave’s House. Once established in permanent supportive housing, residents receive ongoing mental health care managed by our behavioral health service partners. Case Managers connect residents to community resources, ensuring they have access to the services and support they need. For those residents who need continued support, Dave’s House can be their forever home. Independent Living | Individuals continue living in wellness, with stable mental health, financial and daily living foundations in place. Housing Model Dave’s House utilizes two models, dependent upon resident-specific needs: • Scattered Site Single Family Home: This Traditional Home Model keeps individuals from the streets – creating a single family home residence for typically four individuals who are graduating from transitional care, learning the necessary life skills to live in the community, with others. All residents have been previously homeless due to their serious mental illness. • Dave’s Housing First: This Housing First Model takes individuals off the streets – providing apartment homes for those with serious mental illness alongside co-occurring disabilities. These individuals require a much greater intensity of case management and services. Homes Lead To Healing Simply having a place that is home empowers our residents to shift their focus from surviving to thriving. Their Dave’s House home provides an environment for success – breaking the cycle of homelessness, jail and hospitalization. A stable, permanent home is the foundation our residents need to get on, and stay on, the road to wellness. They can focus instead on improving themselves, contributing to their communities, managing life obstacles and realizing their potential. Our homes provide independence, a sense of security and a support network of acceptance and caring. Many residents volunteer and mentor others with serious mental illness. It’s a peer-driven support system that makes permanent supportive housing even more effective.
