Mission Statement
LURN is a nonprofit, community development organization based in Los Angeles. Founded in 2008, LURN’s mission is to bring people together to design, build, and promote sustainable communities that allow people to live their greatest potential. LURN advocates for thoughtful urban policy, and designs and implements economic development projects that support small businesses and generate access to healthy food in low-income neighborhoods. LURN empowers communities by prototyping innovative solutions that aim to close systemic gaps. Overall, LURN’s programs are created with scalability in mind: generating models that can be replicated and applied to all types of urban environments.
About This Cause
LURN's programs and initiatives aim to foster responsible revitalization in low-income and disenfranchised communities across LA. Since bringing on its first full-time staff in 2013, LURN has become a leader in the citywide campaign to create a permit system for street vendors including successfully advocating for the decriminalization of street vending just last year. LURN also grew its micro-finance funds to serve 15 entrepreneurs deploying over $170,000 in micro-loans and investments into businesses in low-income neighborhoods. LURN’s healthy food purchasing cooperative, COMPRA Foods (Community Markets Purchasing Real and Affordable Foods) grew its network of corner stores in food desert communities from 12 to 66 in just one year. To date, LURN has delivered 89,500 pounds of fresh and affordable produce to residents who would otherwise not have access to healthy food. While these numbers are small, there is city-wide recognition that LURN’s unique models are working for low-income families. Operating at the intersection of health and economic development, LURN is working to expand its initiatives across LA County, focusing on areas most in need of innovative approaches to fight poverty and reverse declining health.
