Mission Statement

The AHF mission is to use our expertise, experience, resources and contacts to catalyze changes that will reduce health disparities and gaps in services for vulnerable and underserved populations and communities. AHF's mission is to:1) Identify problems that are not appropriately recognized or served by other initiatives. 2) Develop, demonstrate and help implement innovative solutions 3) Secure the ownership, support and participation of the stakeholders that are best positioned to disseminate and encourage replication of the solution and 4) Focus the attention of the public, policy makers, organizations and other appropriate interests on the problem to generate understanding and support for the solutions. To fulfill the mission AHF will create and implement a national program that will engage rural health services in proactively recruiting veterans for non-clinical jobs that require veterans' skills and characteristics.

About This Cause

The Atlas Health Foundation is the only national organization working to expand rural veterans' employment opportunities. 25% of veterans are rural-an overlooked and under-served population. Health services, the only expanding rural employment sector, need non-clinical staff with veteran's skills and characteristics. AHF and collaborating organizations will implement a national program that will guide rural veterans to good jobs while helping rural health services meet the challenge of recruiting a well qualified workforce. The hospital and health services sector, with its mission of public service and presence in nearly every community, is uniquely positioned to make a significant contribution to veteran employment. It is a WIN/WIN. This is the signature veteran employment initiative of the nation's health services delivery leadership-representing about 1/7 of our economy. The participating organizations are: The National Rural Health Association, American Hospital Association, Federation of American Hospitals. National Association of Community Health Centers, American College of Healthcare Executives and American College of Cardiology joined by The American Legion and Volunteers of America. THE PROJECT WILL BRING MOST RURAL HEALTH SERVICES INTO PROACTIVE VETERAN RECRUITMENT FOR THE THOUSANDS OF NON-CLINICAL JOBS THAT REQUIRE VETERAN'S SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS The project has four stages that will accomplished in three years: The fourth stage and primary objective will be implementation by rural health services across the country. The third stage will be dissemination of the program by the national associations and other methods The second stage will be demonstrations of model rural community programs by three leading rural health service systems. The first stage will be pilot programs implemented in rural Iowa and Utah. The pilot programs and demonstration will be implemented by The Genesis Health System (Davenport, Iowa), The Heartland Health Alliance (Lincoln, Nebraska), and Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City, Utah). The three highly regarded systems are representative of the nation's health systems. COVID-19's impact on rural health services is expanding veteran's opportunities. The work environment is changing as health services respond by increasing their investment in managerial and clinical technologies to improve productivity and performance. They need to recruit a more technologically competent non-clinical staff. An important recent study, cited in The Economist (April, 2020), makes it clear that the U.S. military is selectively recruiting and training for services needed for a technologically based mission. That describes the skills and characteristics that health services need and the connection that this project will make clear to employers. With the advice of experts in veteran's employment and health services we have developed the local program model that will provide "the foot in the door" to health jobs and careers for rural veterans and spouses. The core of the program is a 12-15 session program at the local hospital that follows a syllabus provided by AHF. The hospital designates an employee, ideally a veteran, as facilitator, a part-time position. The facilitator, working with an advisory committee of community leaders, will proactively recruit veterans to participate in the program. That means going out into the community to personally contact veterans, an important innovation of this program. The evening three hour sessions consist of presentations by and networking with health career role models and on-line topical presentations. Each participant is teamed with an employee mentor who works with the facilitator to respond to participant's interest in connecting with jobs, internships and career counseling. Weber State University, Ogden Utah, is our education partner. A regional, career-oriented university, Weber has deep experience with veteran and rural outreach, on-line education and on-base certificate and degree programs. Weber will provide the on-line program content and provide readily available career counseling. The national organizations will disseminate the demonstration experience through all of their extensive communications resources, providing extraordinary leverage for the investment in the demonstration. They will also promote hiring "graduates" of the program. We will be pleased to share a more detailed program plan with you. AHF is by design a small organization. This project demonstrates how we identify a problem, imagineer a response, and then mobilize, focus and guide the resources of our partnering organizations toward the solution-they are in the best position to deliver the impact on the veteran and the community. Our board and voluntary staff have years of "track record" designing and implementing consequential foundation and public supported projects and programs. We, along with donors who share our mission, provide support. WHAT WE NEED TO MAKE THIS PROGRAM REAL IN HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITIES. Everything is in place to implement the program. We need a grant to implement the demonstration project. We need contributions to AHF for the program's development and administrative support.
