Mission Statement
The Boys & Girls Club of Milford is an after school program for youth in Milford between the ages of 6 and 18. Our after school program provides academic enrichment and recreational activities to help young people improve their lives by building self-esteem and developing values and skills during critical periods of growth through our five core program areas: Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, The Arts, and Sports, Fitness and Recreation. Programming is available during critical times of the day when youth might be home by themselves or otherwise unsupervised with the possibility of being exposed to at risk behaviors. Young people from throughout the City of Milford can attend the Club from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
About This Cause
The Boys & Girls Club of Milford is part of a nationwide affiliation of local, autonomous organizations that work to help young people of all backgrounds develop the qualities they need to become responsible citizens and leaders. It is facility-based, employs 3 full time and 14 part time paid professional staff members, supplemented by hundreds of volunteers. Today, over 2000 boys and girls in Milford have taken advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Milford. They benefit from trained, caring, professional staff and volunteers who help young people take control of their lives, envision productive futures, and achieve their goals. Due to the need for both parents to be employed in today’s economy, sometimes working 2-3 jobs, young people do not have the benefit of going home after school and having an adult present who can interact with them; they are often left to their own resources. It is important that positive programs and activities be made available during these critical times of the day to prevent the possibility of young people being exposed to at risk behaviors. Studies have shown that the time period between 3:00pm – 6:00pm is potentially the most dangerous time of the day for youth since many are often left home alone during this time. When left alone with no constructive or positive activities, youth will often turn to negative and potentially dangerous activities such as drug and alcohol use, vandalism and sexual activity. We are happy to be able to provide a safe place with caring adults and positive activities for students during this crucial time of the day. In program year 2014-15 we served 372 youth in Milford. Of the 372 youth being served 56% are male and 44% are female; 14% African American, 20% Hispanic, 57% White, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% other/Unknown. 61% of our total membership is considered either at or below the poverty level based on HUD’s 2015 income limit table. In our current program year 2015-2016 we are currently serving 322 youth in Milford. We are projecting our membership to reach over 425 youth in 2015-16.
