Mission Statement
Support the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center with assistance for emergency medical care and rehabilitation of shelter pets and to increase public awareness of animal health and welfare issues in Cochise County.
About This Cause
The Friends of the Sierra Vista Animal Shelter, Inc had its beginnings when several community members came together to aid shelter pets cared for by the City of Sierra Vista. This aid funded medical procedures necessary to improve the pet’s health and increase the likelihood of a successful adoption. In 2011, this informal effort resulted in the establishment of the Friends of the Sierra Vista, Inc as a non-profit organization. Currently, twelve community members serve on the Board of the Directors, all unpaid volunteers who continue to support the original intent of the founding members. Funding emergency medical treatment of shelter pets when other resources are not available to cover treatment costs was the original mission and continues to be our cornerstone program. While the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center, Sierra Vista is our primary focus we also have assisted the Cochise County Sheriff Animal Control Division, and non-profit animal rescues in Cochise County. As we grew, so did our ability to provide for the pets of our community. In coordination with the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center staff, we expanded our programs to include: One Paw at a Time – Door to Door Rabies Vaccination Clinics are conducted at no cost to the pet owners. Since the first Clinic was held in June 2015, these clinics have provided wellness exams, rabies shots, micro chipping, and city dog licenses to over 1600 pets. Low cost Spay/Neuter Clinics provide this critical procedure that not only reduces unwanted pet population but protects the pet from future illness. Since the first Clinic was held in June 2019, these clinics have provided services to over 500 pets. Scholarships for training Animal Control Officers IACO) to continue and increase their skill sets. Supported training has inculded Equine Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Preparation, and Animal Control Conferences. We had two long term projects that we are very proud to have accomplished. The first being a three-year effort to raise the funds to purchase and then donate a mobile unit to the City to be used to host adoption events, support One Paw at a Time – Door to Door Rabies Vaccination Clinics, and education events. The second project was helping to fund medical equipment for the surgical suite extension to the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center. This surgical suite will provide for on-site care of the shelter pets. Funding for these programs and others is a combination of grants, donor contributions, support of our fundraising events.
