Mission Statement

Women Work Together supports women and girls in highland Guatemala in their efforts toward gender equality, focusing on girls' access to education. Our mission is to raise the socio-economic status of Guatemalan women and girls by cultivating and strengthening their ability to work effectively in groups and aspire to leadership, thus accelerating positive changes in their lives and in their communities. We believe that the cycle of poverty and powerlessness endemic to rural Mayan women can be broken through systemic grassroots change that values and invests in girls' education and leadership. To accomplish this, we have taken an uncommon path in Latin America, partnering with local government and community leaders in San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Marcos, Guatemala, to plan and implement Women Work Together programs that strengthen the capacity of indigenous Mayan women and girls.

About This Cause

Women Work Together (WWT) was founded in 2009 to partner with and support an emerging, community-led initiative in the Guatemalan highlands created to develop and institutionalize a girls’ leadership program as a means of motivating and supporting adolescent Maya girls to stay in school, direct their own futures, and become community leaders. The program was expanded in 2016 to include adolescent boys and now serves all students in participating schools throughout their 3 years of middle school. ADIMTU (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral: Mujeres Trabajan Unidas), WWT’s sister organization in Guatemala, was established in 2012 by local leaders as a legally registered non-profit in San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos, Guatemala, to advance this work in the region, independent of changes in local government. For 13+ years, WWT volunteers have generated and donated extensive professional support, expertise and funding to further the local development of the Instituto de Liderazgo (Leadership Institute), now a continuous 3-year curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Education. To date, this work has impacted over 10,000 students, their teachers, schools and families, with significant, documented positive outcomes.
