Mission Statement

Journey: The Ed Colina Foundation is committed to improving the lives of impoverished women and children in sub-Saharan Africa. We provide sustainable solutions to problems of hunger, abuse, lack of education and inadequate healthcare. -Provide emergency food assistance to those in and around Athi River. -Provide education opportunities to those children and adults who desire it. -Improve the health status of the community within culturally permissible parameters through hygiene education, disease prevention, HIV/AIDS awareness, and pre/post natal care. -Make available sustainable means for women of the community to have control of their own lives and futures via income-generating activities. Founded in 2009, our Foundation is dedicated to walking with those in need; those who are poor, hungry and thirsting, wherever they might be found in our world. We look forward to this journey, walking side by side with those of different cultures and traditions.

About This Cause

The Ed Colina Foundation was founded in 2009 but Ed Colina began his work in Kenya in September of 2007. It was at that time that Ed saw the need to support educational programs among the poorest of the poor. The need at that time was to support the girl-child, who was often forced into early marriage and no educational opportunities. Ed moved to Kenya and with the support of individual donors, began to construct small ECDE Centers (preschools) adjacent to Masai villages. Because these small iron-sheet classes were close to the villages, young 3 - 8 year old children could walk to school. The Foundation continued to manage and monitor each of these classrooms for 3-5 years before gradually withdrawing support and leaving a solid educational facility to local leadership. Over the fifteen years spent in Kenya, The Ed Colina Foundation has constructed and/or supported 12 preschools in and around Nairobi, Bisil (toward Tanzania border) and the Turkana area of Northern Kenya. With each of these small ECDE Centers was also begun a feeding program - porridge in the morning, rice and beans in the afternoon. For some, these were the only meals of the day. To help support these schools, the Foundation began Income Generating Activities (IGA). Through the sales of Kenyan jewelry, a small 4 acre farm and a 900-chicken operation, additional income was produced to assist the schools. Today, the Foundation continues its mission to provide education to young children who are in most need. See details regarding our Kibera Slum School at http://www.edcolinafoundation.org/kibera We have also begun a food program for struggling elderly in the area of Machakos, Kenya. See here: http://www.edcolinafoundation.org/machakos-food Our latest project strives to serve the most fragile and under-served population in Kenya, those children with severe handicapping conditions. We have recently broken ground on the new Otunga Center for Children! See details here: http://www.edcolinafoundation.org/otunga Ed continues to live most of the year in Kenya and manage the Foundations programs.
