About This Cause

Finding Freedom through Friendship (FFF), is a non-profit organization established by Jody Greenlee, RN and is headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky with a secondary office in Jacksonville, FL. The organization has a local presence in Guatemala and Egypt. All operations are currently conducted by volunteers from “home” offices. The founding board members observed that a transitional social intervention program was needed to guarantee sustained good health and success for the widows and their children. As it was, the chronic stress stemming from poverty, illiteracy and high birth rates was a vicious cycle of dependence and impoverishment for breaking the yoke of poverty and well-being. FFF was formed to provide healthcare (medical and medicine), nutrition (food & supplements), shelter, education (preschool through high school, higher education & vocational in specific individuals) and microfinance business. The achievement for women household heads and their children has successfully demonstrated a reversal of poverty -- not only by the household heads but to the subsequent generation (s) --- the children. Currently, the program supports 42 mothers and 139 youth. As to date, FFF has built 48 homes! In 2017, FFF proudly announced the first two professional indigenous Guatemalan female graduates, a nurse and a lawyer. Finding Freedom through Friendship, Inc. (FFF), a 501c3 non-profit, empowers widows and children in endemic deprivation to reverse the yoke of poverty through provisions of shelter, health, nutrition, education and economic skills for long-term sustainability for the individual and the community. Poverty is one of the horrific challenges facing the world. The impact of poverty propagates into illiteracy, unemployment, violence, malnutrition and health diseases. Worldwide, there are approximately 1.2 billion people lack access to electricity, 870 million are malnourished and 780 million have no access to clean, safe drinking water. Women, especially widows, are the most vulnerable victims of ingrained poverty because of the prevailing patriarchal culture depriving them of equal opportunities, security, and safety. FFF recognizes empowerment is necessary to reduce destitution and decrease the gap of gender and social inequality. Women support families through wage labor, preserve traditional knowledge, maintain biodiversity, and ensure household food security and nutrition. Despite these critical roles, women and young girls continue to suffer the effects of poor healthcare, education, and discriminatory policies.
