KITTY BUNGALOW CHARM SCHOOL FOR WAYWARD CATS

LOS ANGELES, California, 90062 United States

Mission Statement

Because feral cats are often maligned and villainized, we have created a safe haven for ferals, and advocate for their caretakers, while taking an active leadership role to humanely end the feline overpopulation problem. As California's only 100% street cat rescue, we provide Trap Neuter Return (TNR) services throughout the City of Los Angeles and operate a socialization facility for feral kittens, preparing them for adoption into lifelong homes. Our kittens are cared for and socialized for 12 hours each day by our cadre of 100 weekly volunteers. Other programs include: 1) Home school program, which supports community members with the means and ability to see their ‘rescue’ through to a loving home. We pay for spay/neuter, vaccinations and medical care and provide adoption support; 2) School Lunch program, which provides monthly food allocations to low-income feral colony managers; and 3) Working Cat program, which pulls feral cats from the shelter & adopts them out to businesses as rodent deterrent.

About This Cause

Kitty Bungalow is dedicated to ending the proliferation of homeless cats and kittens born on the streets of Los Angeles. Because feral cats are of maligned and villainized, we have created a safe haven for ferals, and advocate for their caretakers, while taking an active leadership role to humanely end the feline overpopulation problem. We rescue directly from the streets, keeping cats from entering the shelter system, thus helping to reduce the overcrowding that results in high shelter kill rates. We provide Trap Neuter Return (TNR) services to some of Los Angeles’ most underserved communities and socialize feral kittens at our cage-free facility, graduating Ivy League lap cats into life-long, loving homes. As Southern California's only 100% feral cat socialization facility and rescue organization, we focus our efforts on the frequently overlooked feral cat in underserved Los Angeles communities. Founded in 2009, in just six short years Kitty Bungalow has become one of the leading advocates for feral cats in Los Angeles and a major player in the animal rescue arena. We have adopted out over 1,300 kittens and have provided TNR services to nearly 8,000 cats. Our programs include: Charm School: We have a cage-free, no-kill facility in South Los Angeles as well as a satellite adoption space at PetSmart West LA. Each year, between 300 and 400 hissy kittens come enter our classrooms and graduate into loving homes. While many of the cats sterilized through humane trappings are returned into the community, we often come across kittens who still have a chance at socialization and a life in a lap. These cats are enrolled in our South Los Angeles-based Charm School. Young kittens are taken off of the street and brought to our facility, where they are broken of their feral ways through hours of interactions and trainings provided by a trained team of over 100 volunteers. The kittens’ temporary home is a cage-free environment, with plenty of toys to play with and beds for comfortable napping and for snuggling with their litter mates or new friends. Kittens are also provided with top-notch medical care through our own medical interns and our veterinary partner Animal Health Care Center, a wonderful full-service office that provides our rescue with discounted rates on all medical treatments, allowing us to provide more services for cats in need. When cats are ready, they are placed in life-time loving homes with their adoptive families. Trap Neuter Return Truancy Officer Program: Through TNR, we reach over 1,000 unfixed adult feral cats annually, stopping tens of thousands of unwanted kittens from ending up in our city shelters and helping to solve the cat overpopulation problem through our humane intervention. Since our inception, we have TNR’d almost 8,000 cats. In Los Angeles, 76% of all animals being killed in the city shelters are kittens eight weeks and under. We understand the correlation between that figure and the number of unfixed street cats. Teams of TNR volunteers work in close concert with community partners to coordinate successful TNR events. Working Cat Program: Through the Working Cat program, feral cats at the South LA shelter who are slated for euthanasia are pulled from the shelter and adopted out to businesses such as barns, feed stores, wineries and farms as a simple green rodent deterrent. In exchange for basic care, they provide 24 hour mice rat population control. Cats don't have to be great hunters to get rid of rodents as cats roaming around a property can leave their scent everywhere, which deters rodents. Before going to their new home, each healthy cat is spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. These cats are provided protection from predators and clean water and kibble daily. A homeless cat gets a home and a business gets a natural, safe, and effective method to rid their property of rats and mice. Home School Program: Our organization is used best with the more feral cats or those that need more attention. We created our home school program to support people with means and ability to see kittens they rescue through to a loving home. We pay for spay/neuter, vaccinations and medical and provide adoption support in various forms. Almost all of our home school cats get placed without having to enroll in the Bungalow, enabling us to help an additional 100+ kittens per year find their lifelong homes.
