Mission Statement

Concerts in Motion’s mission is to relieve social isolation and enhance quality of life through personal, live concert visits. Our roster of 115 professional musicians can perform 16 genres and speak 17 languages, and 150 students aged 7-18 perform as part of our youth program. We recognize that the COVID-19 pandemic has only increased the social isolation of New York’s older adults and the need for connection is greater than ever. For a decade prior to the current situation, our organization has been focused explicitly on the goal of using concert visits to relieve social isolation. Our concerts are formatted to allow time for questions and conversation, and we have learned how to provide an experience that combines first-rate music performance with meaningful social interaction. Over the years we have refined our ability to reach even the frailest older adults, including those who are typically unresponsive. By continuing to provide this service through a virtual platform, we are offering significant relief and joyful connection to older adults whose isolation is all the more acute now, and we are providing musicians with regular performance opportunities. As well, our Youth Music Program provides students from under-resourced schools and communities with opportunities to share their love of music and deepen their interpersonal and leadership skills.

About This Cause

Concerts in Motion’s unique history of performing for individuals in their homes and other intimate settings has enabled us to reach isolated older adults in ways that other arts organizations have not been able to do during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure high-quality online programming, our staff team created a basic script for the musicians and then regularly observed them and gave feedback. We were successful at achieving a combination of high-quality music and high-quality interaction online. Our programs aim to serve the lowest-income, most isolated residents, so audience members without WIFI can call into the concerts if they are unable to join by video. We are currently providing a minimum of 14 concerts each week, reaching up to 75 individuals with each concert, and 4 of these weekly concerts are performed by our youth musicians. We offer a range of music genres, including concerts performed in Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish. One concert a week is designed specifically for people with dementia. Whereas our in-person concerts were categorized as either “group” or “private home” events, in the virtual format the two categories blend together. Now, individuals in their private homes sign up to attend virtual concerts that others are also attending from their private homes. Thus, the virtual concerts provide recipients with an opportunity to see and interact with other older adults as well as with the musicians. Additionally, we have now resumed live in-person concerts with our partner agencies. Concert recipients say “Thank you for making me feel grateful that I'm alive,” “Your music was so good! You opened my heart.” Our agency partners report the powerful impact that our concerts have on the people they serve: “The musicians were masterful and knowledgeable. They responded well to the audience and explained everything at a level everyone could understand.” “This is the highlight of the week for our clients, and staff as well. Everyone looks forward to the performances of Concerts in Motion.” “As always, Concerts in Motion delivered a bit of sunshine into everyone’s day.” Just as our professional concerts offer musicians an opportunity to perform in a meaningful setting, so do our youth concerts offer students that same opportunity. Our Youth Music Program helps students to grow as performers, both in their musicianship and in their interpersonal skills. Our newest component, the Performance, Access, Education, Knowledge (PEAK) program, is a free, online after school enrichment program that provides underserved students direct access to some of the country’s most talented artists through virtual panels and workshops. PEAK students can also participate in the other components of our Youth Music Program, through which students experience the pleasure of using their own love of music to reach the city’s most isolated, low-income older adults. Youth have opportunities to perform regularly, to plan and organize events, and to mentor other students in the program.
