Mission Statement

Face It WORKS with men to overcome and beat their depression, through peer-support, education, in-person groups, and online tools.

About This Cause

Dear Friends, Silently millions of men in America live with the pain and hopelessness associated with depression. For many men, admitting they are suffering from depression means admitting to being “weak” or that they are not “man enough.” Tragically, due to these attitudes and beliefs we lose over 31,000 men to suicide each year and most often these untimely deaths are the result of untreated depression. We can do better. We MUST do better. And Face It is DOING better! Launched in 2010, Face It has been working hard to improve the lives of men who suffer from depression. Face It offers support groups for men with depression, provides one to one outreach for men with depression, offers public education, and focuses on the use of Peer-Support to help men overcome their depression. Other Accomplishments in 2014 include: •2 Men's weekend retreats •3 ongoing men's support groups •Provided over 1100 hours of 1:1 in-person, telephone, group, and text support to men with depression •Launched the Face It Mom's group, which is a support network for mom's who have lost a child to suicide •Developed 4 web-based Cognitive Behavioral tools for men to self-manage their depression •Increased the Face It Men's Peer Support network by 12 men •Provided consultation to 7 professional organizations that work with men who have depression •Delivered over 25 educational events on depression As we continue to expand and improve our service offerings we need partners such as you. We need your encouragement, your volunteer efforts, and your financial support. When we help a man overcome his depression we are not only helping him, we are also helping his wife, partner, girlfriend, children, and friends. Don't take our word for it, read below what one member of one of our Face It Support Groups had to say... “Yeah, thanks for having me the other night. I know I mentioned this then, but it bears repeating: I walked into that office strung out on stress, worry, and this absurd vision of certain doom. And by the time I left, I felt so much calmer. Life seemed (and, happily, continues to seem) less scary. You guys all helped me to see how irrational my thoughts had gotten. And this, I think, is the true success of a model like Face It's. I often need grounding. When my anxiety ramps up to panic levels, I truly can't tell what's reasonable and what isn't. I need external voices to talk me down, to remind me of reality. And this can't totally be achieved through one-on-one therapy. Because, in therapy, I'm always going to have a tiny bit of suspicion that the therapist is blowing smoke up my ass. He/she is paid to talk me down from crazy thoughts, he/she is really only a step away from being a complete stranger, and so I can't always buy in to the reality checks therapy might provide. Yesterday was really a victory owed to Face It. You guys saved me.” Please join us in this important effort by donating to Face It. Thank you! Mark Meier Executive Director
