Mission Statement
PCR creates a unique, comprehensive and free after-school enrichment experience for young people in The School District of Philadelphia by offering a mix of competitive rowing, academic mentorship, and wellness education. With an emphasis on reaching underserved communities, PCR strives to create an inclusive environment that helps all young people unlock their true potential and explore the possibilities of their future. PCR's programs are tailored to suit students of different age groups and levels of experience. Our specific program offerings include competitive rowing for high school students (school year), recreational rowing for middle school students (school year and summer), and learn-to-row camps for high school and middle school students (summer). Unlike many youth rowing organizations, PCR maintains a culture that reaches under-resourced youth, puts students first, and is inclusive, transformative, and engaged with the community. We actively recruit at-promise students in order to serve those who have the most to gain from our programming and to ensure that all of our participants benefit from a team environment that reflects the rich racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of Philadelphia Rowing is a demanding sport that requires exceptional discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Our multi-faceted programs reinforce these values and help student-athletes apply them to their lives outside of rowing. We leverage staff, volunteers, and community partners to provide our student-athletes with a variety of services and opportunities for growth and development, all while striving to provide an atmosphere that encourages excellence, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship.
About This Cause
For decades, young people from historically marginalized communities in Philadelphia have missed out on the benefits rowing can provide in terms of academic support, college exploration, access to nature, and connections to an expanded network of caring adults. Rowing is a demanding sport that requires exceptional discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. It is also proven to provide crucial life-skills such as time management, self-discipline, goal-setting, team-building, confidence, and communication. Exposure to these skills contribute to helping young people lead more impactful and successful lives. PCR believes no young person should miss out on opportunities to build a successful future because of where they come from. By removing barriers such as cost, PCR is creating an equitable and accessible environment that allows all young people to thrive. PCR offers three distinct programs each of which is tailored to specific age groups and skills levels. These include our high-dosage, competitive high school program; our recreational middle school program; and our experiential summer learn-to-row camps. PCR’s high-dosage, competitive high school program brings Philadelphia Public School students out of their neighborhoods and onto the Schuylkill River, creating a safe place for them to find their strengths, grow together as a team, and make college a reality. Practices take place six days per week and include academic support, mentoring, enrichment activities, and regional racing opportunities. We also provide healthy snacks, a custom nutrition education program, team uniforms, swimming instruction, and public transportation tokens to eliminate the financial burden of sports participation on families. PCR’s middle school program and summer learn-to-row camps introduce students to the sport of rowing and lay the groundwork for future participation in our flagship high school program. Our Middle School Program serves students in 7th and 8th grade and meets three days per week for six weeks each season. Our Summer Learn-to-Row Camps serve rising 7th through 12th graders and meet five days per week for three weeks at a time. Members of our high school team work in paid positions as junior coaches, mentoring younger athletes and expanding their work experience and leadership skills. The goal of both of these programs is to provide a fun introduction to the non-traditional sport of rowing and to engage youth in games and other activities that promote overall health and well-being. Our outcomes and impact are enhanced by the suite of services and enrichment programs we offer, including a custom college readiness program, mental health and resilience training, nutrition and health education, experiential environmental education, and community engagement activities.
