Mission Statement
We are experiencing fragmentation and divisiveness in our culture. Families are experiencing the same dilemma. Despite having very different beliefs about religion, politics, sexual orientation, or other ideas, we have maintained our closeness and respect for each other. One of the ways we have done that is through sharing meals from our different cultures. Our request to the GE Foundation therefore is to publish a book that addresses how we personally navigate these times using food and cultural history as the vehicle. There are so many stories in our family histories that coincide with recipies that will enable families to enjoy their diversity, love and respect for each other no matter their different belief systems. Herein is a proposal to publish such a book with an ask to the Foundation $15,000 to partially cover the $27,000 cost
About This Cause
Narrative description of activities GEO Pontes, Inc. is a non-profit, community based organization whose mission is to develop economic stability for individuals and families living in Santa Clara County. Our aim is to catalyze change by investing in people – giving low-income individuals and families the tools for economic success, and in places – creating neighborhoods that are vibrant, diverse, sustainable centers of opportunity. More specifically, GEO Pontes, Inc. will sponsor two distinct approaches: 1) Community development and 2) International education. 1) Community Development Program The Community Development program addresses the needs of low wage earners and the long-term unemployed within Santa Clara County, California.Low wage earners are individuals and families who remain poor despite having regular employment. The long-term unemployed are Americans who remain without work for 27 weeks or more. Populations experiencing episodes of joblessness and low wage employment include single parent families, seniors, families with children, individuals, and the homeless. GEO Pontes, Inc. is a community-based effort that will increase and preserve the supply of affordable, location-efficient housing, improve economic self-sufficiency, and rebuild wealth in communities of color. Affordable housing: Stable housing is the foundation for good health, academic success, civic engagement, and assets accumulation. In the Bay Area many people lack decent, affordable housing, living wage employment, safe streets, quality schools, access to public transit, and access to healthy food. While some residents move away from the urban core to find affordable housing, the resulting transportation costs can make this a losing trade-off. GEO Pontes is an organization engaged in community development initiatives that support and empower residents and develop and preserve accessible and affordable homes tied to well-functioning, environmentally sustainable neighborhoods. GEO Pontes will partner with local agencies and builders to build new affordable, multi-unit,residential housingand to remodel existing residencies into affordable housing. This is accomplished through raising funds for land acquisition, acquiring land, constructing affordable housing, and managing properties. Work-force development services: In order to improve economic stability, individuals and families must develop appropriate work skills and address other impediments to enhancing their economic viability. When buildingneighborhoods, we will invest in their long-term success with recreational amenities, childcare facilities and community buildings with tenant services. Working with strong community partners, we will bring in services that enhance the lives of our renters and homebuyers. GEO Pontes will partner with local community colleges, human service organizations serving low income individuals and families, and businesses to increase the skills of low income earners and the unemployed. GEO Pontes will accomplish this by providing soft skill training as well as technical skills by offering classes co-located in the affordable housing community, utilizing partner facilities and instructors, and making referrals to appropriate education and training institutions. GEO Pontes will also provide referrals for families and individuals needing other important services such as health, mental health, and financial coaching.
