About This Cause

Hospice of the Comforter - Executive Summary MISSION Hospice of the Comforter is compassionate people providing compassionate care. We are guided by the highest ethical principles while expertly caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families facing an incurable illness. Founded in 1990, the vision of Hospice of the Comforter (HOTC) was to touch lives with compassion, support and the tangible benefits provided through hospice care. HOTC created a program guided by Judeo-Christian values that would compassionately serve patients with any terminal illness and from all cultural populations. Hospice and palliative care has quickly become a new growth sector of the medical industry. The demand for such care in Greater Orlando is reflected in the rapid growth of Hospice of the Comforter– from caring for 61 patients in 1990 to nearly 400 patients today. The goal of hospice is to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. Hospice is appropriate when there is a life expectancy of six months or less. Hospice affirms life and views death as a natural process. When a cure is no longer possible, Hospice of the Comforter provides the gold standard in pain control, palliative medical care, nursing, emotional, and spiritual support. Hospice care helps to enable patients to carry on an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so their final days may be spent with dignity and quality at home or in a homelike setting. Hospice is not designed to hasten death or “help” someone die, but rather to help patients live the remainder of their lives as fully as possible. Most people, if asked, will say they dream of a peaceful, comfortable death surrounded by their loved ones. HOTC’s interdisciplinary team of trained professionals work together to deliver hospice services that can make that dream a reality at the same time that it helps address the multitude of end-of-life issues effectively. HOTC provides palliative care and support for terminally ill adult and pediatric patients and their families in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola Counties. Care teams consist of doctors, nurses, psychosocial counselors, certified nursing assistants, chaplains, respite volunteers, and bereavement counselors, who together, help patients and their families understand the end of life on their terms.
