Mission Statement
Alpha Public Schools is a network of four high-performing public charter schools founded by a group of East San José mothers dedicated to helping transform their community.
About This Cause
Our Mission Alpha students, families and teachers collaborate to develop the 21st century academic skills and character strengths students need for success in school, college and career. Together we create self-reliant leaders committed to making positive change in the world. Our Vision Students from underserved communities are prepared to compete successfully on life’s uneven playing field— to struggle, to overcome and to thrive. Our Demographics Students who qualify for Free/Reduced Price Lunch - 83% Student receiving Special Education Services - 11% Students classified as English Learners - 44% Students of Color - 99% Our Program • East San Jose – Alpha is deepening our roots in East San Jose. We have built a K-12 Continuum to serve students and families in this community from childhood to college. • Families at the Core – Alpha was started by a committed group of moms who were no longer willing to accept that their children should attend failing schools. Alpha believes that parent involvement is key to student success and facilitates hundreds of hours of parent volunteer opportunities each year. Alpha also operates a Parent Center, which hosts English classes, Technology classes, Food Banks, and clothing drives. • Personalized Instruction – Each student has a laptop at Alpha and utilizes adaptive online learning programs to meet students at their individual levels. Students engage in a variety of learning styles, from teacher led direct instruction, to Socratic seminars, to group projects, to individual work. We offer specialized programming for English Language Learners and extra help for those who need it, all while maintaining the expectation that all students graduate prepared to attend a 4-Year University. • PLT/Leadership Development – In order to be successful in college, students must act as leaders in their own lives. Alpha has pioneered an innovative program to teach students Social-Emotional skills. Teachers deliver Social Emotional curriculum in the classroom, and students practice these lessons with their teams in the field (PE). Students learn to be Self-Reliant Leaders, Collaborative Problem Solvers, and act as leaders in building a Positive School Culture. http://www.alphaplt.com/ • Project 408 Teacher Residency – A great teacher is the single biggest factor in a child’s education, and yet enrollment in CA teacher credentialing programs has been in serious decline over the past 6 years, resulting in a state-wide teacher shortage crisis. In order to combat this serious threat, Alpha has developed Project 408, a teacher residency program built to grow more high quality teachers in East San Jose. Teacher Residents spend a year in an Alpha classroom being mentored by one of Alpha’s top teachers, while simultaneously pursuing a credential. The following year, Teacher Residents transition to full time teachers at an Alpha school. This approach allows Alpha to grow its own talent, while also diversifying its teaching staff. (So far, 100% of Teacher Residents have identified as People of Color). • Computer Science – Living in Silicon Valley, we see first hand the abundance of opportunity and wealth available within the United States Technology Sector. And yet in the US, fewer than 1% of high school students take Computer Science courses. In contrast, Cindy Avitia High School offers 4 years of Computer Science Courses and is committed to having all students pass the AP Computer Science Test. Alpha grads will be prepared for 21st Century Careers.
