About This Cause
Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School (BSNBCS) serves students in grades K-8 who primarily live in Central Brooklyn, in households qualifying for food assistance programs (95%). Our successful programs have led our students to consistently outperform their peers city and statewide in terms of mastery of literacy and numeracy standards. Substantial portions of our learners have a disability (21%), have lived in temporary housing in the past year (20%) or do not speak English at home (15%). Our programs address these challenges holistically, through trauma-informed practices, positive behavioral intervention, and socio-emotional learning. We offer extensive opportunities for family and community engagement, arts and physical education programming in all grades, a free after school enrichment program for all students, and absolutely all learning activities and materials are offered free of charge to our students - from writing supplies to field trips to school uniforms. BSNBCS was founded in 2010 by community members and is still governed by volunteers living in the community or having long-standing ties to the neighborhood and its residents. Our Chair is one of our founders and was born and raised a few blocks away from our site, and attended school in our building, our Vice-Chair is also a founder and a fifth-generation resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Several staff members, including our Principal and two Assistant Principals, choose BSNBCS for their own children as they know that the education provided within our walls is rich, culturally responsive, inclusive and intentionally diverse.
