Mission Statement

The Alexander Hamilton Society (AHS) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit, national organization that seeks to identify, educate, and launch young men and women into foreign policy and national security careers imbued with the Hamiltonian perspective of strong and principled American leadership in global affairs. Hamiltonians are united by a deep conviction, rooted in the history of the last century, that the world is a better, safer, and more prosperous place when the United States is willing and able to lead. Engaging citizens from all walks of life and at every stage in their careers, AHS seeds the ground for the future of American foreign policy.

About This Cause

“No government could give us tranquility and happiness at home, which did not possess sufficient stability and strength to make us respectable abroad.” Alexander Hamilton spoke these words at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and they capture, in a single sentence, the founding principles of the Alexander Hamilton Society. Since 9/11, events have raised pressing questions about the sources, limits, proper uses, and future trajectory of American power, yet a much-needed rethinking of our foreign, economic, and national security policy has not taken place. On the contrary, our national debate has become increasingly polarized, fragmented, and ill-informed. Many believe foreign policy is mainly a tool for responding to threats and view foreign affairs as a distraction. On the other side are those who understand, as Hamilton did, that the preservation of our civil liberty and economic prosperity requires the United States, leading unfailingly in peace and in conflict, to defend a world order hospitable to freedom. The Alexander Hamilton Society was founded to confront our foreign, economic, and security policy failures at their source—American universities—and to provide our students with experience they would otherwise not gain, in all the fields from which they will influence U.S. policy. We firmly believe AHS is responding not merely to demand for a useful program, but also to a genuine need of our country—the need to inspire a new generation with sound convictions about America and its place in the world. Through our faculty anchors and speakers bureau, our campus programming attracts and identifies potential Hamiltonians by exposing them to and inspiring them about our worldview. Our solid national foundation of student-led, faculty-advised campus chapters host debates between our speakers, who are some of our nation’s most distinguished scholars and practitioners, and local professors on topical issues. AHS’s reputation as the go-to organization for students interested in national security and foreign affairs is rapidly spreading across the country. At a time of growing divide between the real challenges our country faces internationally and what academia is choosing to focus on, students are recognizing that AHS can help fill that gap.
