Mission Statement
The mission of Common Ground is to improve wellness throughout out community by expanding opportunities for affordable and accessible complementary heath practices at community-based locations. Our focus is on evidence-based practices such as yoga, mediation, acupuncture, and massage. A portion of every dollar generated from paid programming supports our extensive outreach in the community.
About This Cause
Common Ground is the only organization of its kind in the greater Charlottesville area. Our goal is to provide everyone with access to complementary care, regardless of their ability to pay. Common Ground's commitment to this community has been unwavering in the face of significant change. On June 30, the moved out of the Jefferson School. Although it was difficult to leave our original home, it was the right business decision. Before leaving, programming was scheduled to ensure continuity of care. On July 1, we offered massage and acupuncture at Healthy Streets Healthy People. Two of our acupuncturists established a Saturday clinic in their practice. Two of our massage therapists see CGHA clients in their offices. Classes and workshops have been regularly scheduled. On August 16, we launched our first community-based acupuncture clinic in space rented from the Charlottesville Community Band. Held weekly, every appointment was reserved. On September 12 we opened our second clinic at Region Ten’s Blue Ridge Center. We offer community acupuncture and massage. In October, we consolidated our efforts and now hold both clinics at the Blue Ridge Center. Region Ten does not charge us for the space. They underwrite the cost of services we provide to their constituents. Our clients pay flat fees or amounts adjusted by an income-based sliding scale. The community has welcomed us. Our clients have followed us. We’ve introduced complementary medicine to fifty-three new people who would not otherwise have access to these modalities. During the last quarter of 2023, we provided two hundred twenty-two acupuncture sessions. Sixty-two were returning clients. Seventeen were new. We scheduled eighty-five massage appointments. Twelve slots were filled with new clients. The remaining appointments were taken by thirty-three returning clients. Since transitioning to community-based services, the number of Black clients has increased nearly 35%. Acupuncture has supported the health of countless humans for at least 3000 years. It’s safety and efficacy are well established in eastern cultures. Research shows that acupuncture is safe and effective in treating, addiction, depression, anxiety, chronic disease and pain. Issues reported by new clients include trigeminal neuralgia type 2, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and other musculo-skeletal issues. Others are managing depression, PTSD, migraines, cancer, PMDD, infertility, tinnitus, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Massage has been practiced for as many years. It’s safety and efficacy are also well established. Research shows that massage is effective in reducing back pain, joint pain, improving circulation, reducing edema, muscle tension and headaches, as well as stress and anxiety. Massage improves oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles. It helps people sleep. Issues reported by new clients include chronic back pain, scoliosis, PTSD, stress related to recent release from prison, and schizophrenia. These modalities are beneficial to mothers and infants when offered in the context of postpartum doula care. Common Ground added that service in May 2023. The program director is a licensed massage therapist and a certified pre and perinatal psychology educator. She is also a qualified doula. The director's expertise allows Common Ground to braid the benefits of complementary medicine with the supportive practices of postpartum doula care. She is trained to help women and babies recover from trauma and process the emotional, physical, and psychological transition initiated by birth. We enrolled our first family in September and are now working with four. Three were referred by ReadyKids. One learned about this new program at the LatinX Health Fair. The director meets with the family first to learn about their journey to parenthood. During the initial 1-3 sessions she has been able to provide craniosacral sessions to mothers and/or babies. This gentle manipulation begins to relieve the pain and trauma associated with childbirth. It has enhanced attachment and helped the babies sleep better. We have two qualified doulas, (one bi-lingual) who overlap with the director and support the family for their remaining time with the program.
