Mission Statement
Elephant Aid International (EAI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded by Carol Buckley in 2009 was created to cause a paradigm shift that will foster change in beliefs and approaches to the care and management of elephants throughout the world. With the combined efforts of international scientists, veterinarians, mahouts, elephant caregivers and elephant welfare supporters, EAI is helping to change how the public relates to elephants; how mahouts (elephant handlers) and elephant caregivers train elephants; and how captive elephants are cared for worldwide. EAI has pioneered a new system, "Compassionate Elephant Care," which will eliminate antiquated, dominance-based training and result in improved elephant welfare. By providing education and hands-on assistance, EAI is working to end the worldwide suffering of elephants…one elephant at a time.
About This Cause
ELEPHANT AID INTERNATIONAL (EAI) - Working to Improve Elephant Welfare Worldwide OUR VISION: Founded by Carol Buckley* in 2009, EAI envisions a world in which society respects elephants and provides environments in which they cannot only survive but flourish. WHY EAI? EAI melds knowledge, experience and vision to bring fresh new ideas to the table. Our agenda is simple: Improving the lives of elephants and the people who live and work with them. Our work brings together biologists, mahouts, scientists, researchers, veterinarians, educators, caregivers, NGOs and government agencies from all around the world. OUR GOALS: - Improve the conditions of captivity in which elephants live and eliminate abusive training and management. - Create alternatives to the use of chaining as a form of management. - Train mahouts in positive management techniques so they can better care for and manage their elephants. - Improve the social status of mahouts through education and job advancement. - Remove begging elephants from the streets of Asia by finding alternative livelihoods for mahouts and their families. - Facilitate the establishment of lifetime care centers (sanctuaries). OUR PROJECTS: - Building chain-free enclosures to eliminate the antiquated and physically harmful practice of chaining elephant’s feet to the ground. - Working with government agencies and NGO’s to create permanent elephant care and retirement facilities. -Providing elephant pedicures and training mahouts (elephant trainers) in the skills necessary to support foot health and prevent life-threatening osteomyelitis. - Increasing mahouts’ knowledge of elephant biology, psychology, behavior and learning style to help them develop more positive interpersonal relationships with their elephants. - Improving elephant stable sanitation. - Providing veterinary services. (*Carol Buckley founded and, for 15 years, managed The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, the first natural habitat refuge for sick, old and needy elephants, which, under her stewardship, was internationally known for its integrative holistic approach to medical care and recovery.)
