Mission Statement
Bluegrass Center for Autism (BCA) is a non-profit (501c3) organization which provides individualized 1:1 ratio programming for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Louisville, Kentucky area. BCA’s unparalleled approach to therapy focuses on developing the learning tools and skills that children and young adults need by the time they reach adulthood. BCA was established August of 2010 and has rapidly grown since that time. The demand for our unique curriculum has lead to the opening of two campuses. The Kosair Charities East Campus houses our children ages 3-11, and our older children and young adults ages 12-21, are developing life skills at our Mid City location.
About This Cause
Founded in 2010 under the name of the Academy at St. Andrews, Bluegrass Center for Autism began as small, alternative school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder serving five students in the donated space of a church basement. Since then, we have blossomed into a cutting-edge nonprofit education and therapy center that serves as a model for the region. Today, 51 children and young adults are enrolled in full day therapeutic programming on two campuses. The Lower Campus, at the Kosair Charities East building in Jeffersontown, KY works with children aged 3-12, the Upper Campus, in Louisville's Mid-City Mall, covers ages 13-21. Our integrated developmental strategy blends Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech therapy, occupational therapy, life skills training, academic achievement and job coaching, all under the same roof. We offer a 1:1 child-instructor ratio in most settings, resulting in the most intensely individualized instruction available. Our highly structured days deliver a concentrated experience to meet each child’s specific needs and promote his or her maximum learning potential. BCA utilizes ABA-based instruction techniques individualized to each learner while focusing on the development of communications, functional academics, social skills and life skills. ABA involves the use of objective data to make decisions and determine how well goals are being achieved. Certified and Licensed Behavior Analysts design all behavior plans and skill acquisition programming specifically for each child, refining them as needed based on their progress. All of our instructors and clinical professionals take detailed data on every student, down to five-minute increments, in the areas of behavior and skill mastery. As a result, we are able to provide statistical data at any moment to evaluate the success of a program. BCA is currently the only organization in the greater Louisville area that provides a program of this caliber for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. While there are several wonderful groups providing alternative services for children with special needs, we are the only one that works exclusively with children affected by ASD to provide an all-day one-on-one program individually created for each student. In fact, some of our families travel every day from other counties just so their child can attend BCA because there is simply nothing else like it in the region. A few have even relocated from other states to enroll their child here. To more effectively pursue our mission and maximize the breadth and depth of services we provide, BCA takes great care in operating as efficiently as possible. For example, all but six of our employees work directly with our kids to provide services. Further, the space for our Lower Campus in the Kosair Charities East building is donated by Kosair Charities, while the Metz Family generously provides us the space for the Upper Campus in the Mid-City Mall rent-free. We currently utilize only 10% of our budget for fundraising and administrative expenses (3% and 7% respectively). In other words, you can rest assured that a generous grant to BCA will be an effective and efficient use of the foundation’s resources.
