Mission Statement
TGCP provides furniture and essential household items that make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families overcoming hardship.
About This Cause
The Green Chair Project (TGCP) is working together to provide everyone the comforts of home. We reuse donated furnishings to assist participants in local programs who are transitioning to stability after experiencing homelessness, crisis, or disaster. Since its creation in April 2010, TGCP has furnished over 10,000 households, partnered with 100+ referring human service agencies, diverted 10,000 tons of material from landfills, and helped over 27,000 household members, including over 10,000 children, along their journey to self-sufficiency. TGCP partners with nonprofit agencies that identify, qualify, and refer families who are enrolled in case-managed programs. Referred participants furnish their homes by paying a furnishing fee of $200. TGCP's referral and buy-in system allows participants to take personal responsibility in actively furnishing their homes, rather than passively receiving a handout. We create a dignified experience that encourages families to “shop” for gently used furnishings in our attractive showroom, select items that best match their personal style and needs, and leave with everything necessary to make a new home comfortable and liveable. Without TGCP, many families in transition are forced to choose between going without basic furniture or incurring debt through credit cards or rent-to-own stores, making it even harder for them to build comfortable, stable homes for themselves and their families. Major milestones for 2024 include: -1,734 beds and cribs were provided for children, ensuring they have a safe, comfortable place to sleep. -Essential furnishings were delivered to 1,144 households, helping them transform their living spaces into nurturing homes. -More than 1,000 tons of household items were diverted from landfills, emphasizing the commitment to environmental sustainability. Most of these families were experiencing some kind of stress or transition due to homelessness, natural disaster, domestic violence, or job loss. Poverty and stress can be detrimental to children’s health and development; by helping families get on their feet and create comfortable homes, TGCP helps these children experience increased stability. Our programs provide support in several ways: (1) Families are referred to TGCP by local agencies benefit from the furnishings we provide their family to create comfortable, stable, and dignified homes. (2) Children from these families are also eligible to receive new bed sets. Bed sets include new twin sized bed frames, mattresses, pillows, comforters, and sheets. There is no fee for the bed set. In addition to our traditional furnishings program for families, our Sweeter Dreams School Days program partners with Wake County Public Schools to provide free, new bed sets delivered directly to qualified students. School social workers recommend children who do not have their own bed or are sleeping on the floor or nontraditional means (e.g. chair, mat). Each quarter, TGCP provides new bed sets to approximately 50 Wake County school students delivered to the child’s home for free.
