About This Cause

No More Empty Pots (NMEP) is a grassroots non-profit corporation that connects individuals and groups to improve self-sufficiency, regional food security and economic resilience of urban and rural communities through advocacy and action. No More Empty Pots' vision is to support communities in becoming self-sufficient and food secure through collaboration and adherence to our core values of Education: Consumers, Producers and Our Youth; Stewardship: Land Use and Community Resources; and Sustainability: Triple Bottom Line - People, Planet, and Profit. NMEP prioritizes two primary outcomes: self-sufficiency of people and economic resilience of communities. Our focus is on equitable access to healthy local food with educational, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Our mission is directed at long-term solutions that will drive change. Our goal and what distinguishes our work is the collaboration with people in becoming more self-sufficient through education, access to healthy foods, job training and job placement and with communities to become more economically resilient. No More Empty Pots supports activities with short and long-term social change with local/regional community food systems. The collective group is supporting the revival of a strong distributive model of a localized food system that builds production, processing, distribution, consumption and recycling capacity through education, training, entrepreneurial ventures and community input and support. NMEP programs are intergenerational. Major program areas include: Community Harvest provides prepared, packaged meals that are plant-based, nutritious, delicious, fast, easy and economical for individuals and families. Volunteers, culinary workforce training students and the No More Empty Pots food distribution team work together to prepare, package and distribute the meals. Community Harvest also includes CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes. NMEP collaborates with small farmers in Iowa and Nebraska to provide fresh local produce and eggs accessible to urban and rural residents who may have limited access to fresh, affordable healthy local foods. Community Education provides hands-on, modular, community-responsive food growing and cooking education programming for youth, adults, and seniors designed to increase food production and culinary-related education and self-sufficiency. Programs integrate STEAM components (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) focusing on local and seasonal food to provide a deeper understanding of the food system. No More Empty Pots 8-week Culinary Certificate Program provides hands-on skills based on-the-job culinary training for individuals currently working in the industry that want to sharpen and grow skills. No More Empty Pots Food Entrepreneurship Program provides commercial kitchen space available for rent by the hour and an incubator program. Incubator Membership is a 4 month program designed for entrepreneurs that are ready to build and grow their food businesses. The curriculum covers topics relevant for entrepreneurs who are starting, running and growing food businesses through workshops, mentorship, networking and growth opportunities. The Collaborative Community Centered Food Hub is a food aggregation, entrepreneurship and training hub that connects multiple sectors of the food system. It is based on a system of interdependent activities that include several components: commercial kitchens, community café, cold and dry storage, and food systems focused incubator/accelerator rooted in proven models that deliver positive outcomes in job training, workforce readiness, food waste reduction, healthy food access in underserved areas, income generation and business development. This project addresses the needs of the most vulnerable community residents: 1) creating employment opportunities; 2) filling gaps in the food system and training; and 3) connecting people and resources to an integrated food system. The food hub includes a kids’ kitchen, community café, business incubator and rooftop garden. NMEP programs generate revenue, provide training, create jobs, and provide affordable access to healthy local foods. In collaboration with 75 North, the 17,500 square foot greenhouse will accommodate the year-round, vertical farming and traditional soil production of fresh produce like leafy greens. The facility will provide a commercial kitchen for education, training and entrepreneurship, a research lab for testing and development, classroom for education programs and on-the-job training, and storage for food distribution services and a micro-market to sell high quality nutritious local food and serve as a marketplace for emerging small-scale food entrepreneurs with locally produced products.
