Mission Statement
Rock to the Future (RTTF) is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2010 that provides music education for youth in Philadelphia’s underserved neighborhoods at no cost to them or their families. Using music, our programs ignite passion and creativity, support academic achievement, and improve self-esteem. We empower individuals and strengthen communities.
About This Cause
At Rock to the Future, we know that music education can level the playing field for low-income youth, and we believe a child’s economic status should not limit their access to this important building block for personal development. It is not unusual to hear “music saved my life,” and to learn that music steered a former adolescent away from drugs, gangs, and apathy. By providing marginalized youth with the opportunity to challenge themselves intellectually, express themselves creatively, and grow in self-confidence through music while supporting them socially and academically, we are keeping at-risk youth connected to school and supporting pathways out of poverty. Rock to the Future aims to provide consistent and high quality music programs for lower-income Philadelphia County youth who may not have access to affordable music education because we believe that all youth, no matter their ability or socioeconomic background, can benefit greatly from the lessons and life skills learned on stage. All Rock to the Future programs utilize cost-sharing partnerships and operate directly in schools in underserved communities. Our strategic focus on youth development through modern band instruction creates opportunities that engage and excite youth. As students learn guitar, bass, drums, piano, or vocals, learn songs by their favorite artists, craft original music with peers, and perform at numerous free showcases, they build confidence, leadership skills, and life skills to prepare them for any stage of life. Our nurturing and judgement free environment provides a support system which many students may lack at home or in school. Our staff members receive training in trauma informed practices, classroom management, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and learning styles so they are prepared to be mentors in not only music but in life. We create an environment where students of all ability levels feel respected, safe, and confident enough to shine in the spotlight. No matter what instrument or music style they choose, we create the support structure that allows our students to learn at their own pace and in their own way.
