Mission Statement
We work with the indigenous Mayas living in remote villages in San Martin, Jilotepeque to teach them how to improve their health, education, and overall well being of their families and entire communities.
About This Cause
PEOPLE FOR GUATEMALA, Inc. is breaking the vicious cycle of poverty by working hand-in-hand in partnership with the indigenous Mayas in rural mountain communities in San Martin, Jilotepeque. We engage the people to participate in projects to improve their health, education, and overall well-being. Each project comes directly from people living in the remote villages. They must have an investment in each project. This puts a value on our services and ensures sustainability. Together with our in-country partner, Hombres y Mujeres en Accion, we have worked in San Martin, Jilotepeque, since 2009, home to over 100,000 people, mostly of Maya decent. We focus on improving health and education. People with low resources living in extreme poverty lack even the basic necessities. Through our efforts, families are benefiting from the installation of water delivery systems, school upgrades, sanitation improvements, vented Chapina stoves, classroom support and access to quality medical care. Our local professional medical, dental, and psychology teams treat upwards of 600 patients each month at our medical facility located in Santo Domingo, a rural indigenous village. On February 4, 2018, our Learning and Skills Center opened. Students of all ages can attend sewing, technology, cooking, baking, cosmetology, and English classes.
