Mission Statement
Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts aims to transform students in grades 8-12 into well-versed media contributors by providing a student-centered environment that connects them to the classics and modern languages and a curriculum focused on strong writing skills and vocabulary.
About This Cause
We are a unique public charter high school located in Southwest Washington, DC, serving 300 plus, 8th through 12th grade students. Our demographics show that the majority of our students come from the the most educationally underserved areas of the District of Columbia. 94 % of our student body is African-American. 88% of our students qualify for free and reduced-lunch under current federal guidelines, at least 67% live in poverty and 26% of our students qualify for student support services under PL 94-142. Despite the odds, we transform the lives of our students each day. Our students receive a first-class education that prepares them to be highly productive, intelligent, critical thinkers. They are conscientious leaders, and law-abiding citizens who lead with conviction and integrity. They can advocate for themselves and their communities. They have a voice. Curriculum Richard Wright Public Charter School's (RWPCS) curriculum design is based on Massachusetts's highly acclaimed Boston Latin School. The Boston Latin School's reputation and tradition have maintained a rigorous curriculum centered in humanities for more than a century and we are proud to emulate their proven model. We teach all the standards of any fully accredited high school in the United States and students meet and exceed the standards. We have several AP classes, offer dual enrollment through four local universities in DC. We believe in engaging our students by offering hands-on, learning experiences. Students at Richard Wright take a comprehensive selection of courses in media, the arts, and journalism throughout their years at Richard Wright. Community Partners RWPCS understands the importance of developing strategic partnerships with great organizations. We do this through connections and seek those partnerships that are aligned with our mission, values and purpose. Some of our notable partners are The Rotary Club of Washington, D.C., The Motion Picture Association, The Brown Rudnick Foundation, The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, Humanities DC, and Global Scholars Foundation, the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly, to name a few. Our partners help us offer outstanding educational opportunities and resources to our students. Many partners mentor our students and provide unique hands-on learning experiences that allow students to apply their exceptional media, journalism, and film skills. Richard Wright provides rich, balanced, and diverse opportunities to all students, supporting the mission and vision of the school, fostering intellectual, cultural, social growth, and promoting physical health and wellness. Students participate in various clubs, sports, activities, events, and trips that encourage them to utilize their mental, social and physical skills. Students are continually learning in and beyond the classroom. From professional organizations in the media industry, distinguished colleges and national educational associations, visiting artists and journalists, to an end-of-the-year multimedia gala event, RWPCS continually provides unique opportunities for its students to enhance, supplement, and stimulate each student's life holistically. The innovative programs and practices executed with consistency and efficacy by a dedicated, caring, and hardworking staff build a working learning environment that fosters creativity and exploration. Richard Wright aims to fortify its young people with the resounding impact of education, to transform their lives and those around them, and uphold the vision of "re-writing the future, one student at a time."
