Mission Statement
The World is Just a Book Away (WIJABA) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, CA that seeks to build leaders for the future by empowering children and their communities to change their own lives and the world at large. Our mission is to promote literacy, education, and health by developing libraries and programs that plant the seeds of leadership, environmental consciousness, and community connection.
About This Cause
WIJABA serves hundreds of millions of children worldwide who have no access to books or a well-rounded education and face a life of functional illiteracy and great hardship. WIJABA currently works with communities that have endured great adversity in Indonesia and Mexico. The organization’s efforts in Indonesia, which began in 2009, serve communities in Sidoarjo (devastated by world’s worst mudflow disaster), Padang (recovering from recent tsunami and numerous earthquakes) and Bali (coping with a significant orphan population). In 2012, WIJABA began working with children in Mexico, serving communities in Chihuahua (afflicted by major social and economic upheaval). WIJABA also has libraries in underserved communities in Los Angeles, CA. WIJABA libraries are centers of literacy and learning and also function as community centers and classrooms for WIJABA-facilitated programs. All libraries are within a 2-hour radius of a hub office to facilitate community partnerships. Once a library is well-established, a whole host of educational programs are implemented. WIJABA's programs seek to impart knowledge to improve literacy, reading comprehension, environmental consciousness the overall development of the children who use each facility in order to instill a sense of hope and empowerment. To-date, WIJABA has reached more than 220,000 children through 1 horse library, 4 mobile libraries, 100 physical libraries, an online education program, and our Environmental Education Program in Partnership with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots .
