Mission Statement
The Mission of the Annapolis Dragon Boat Club is to promote the development of healthy bodies and spirits, to support recovery from breast cancer and all other cancers- in both men and women – and to grow friendships and teamwork. The Club promotes and develops the sport of dragon boating as a means of building physical strength, endurance, and confidence with an emphasis on recreation, synchrony, and harmony while on the water… the beautiful Spa Creek.
About This Cause
The Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation, founded in the Spring of 2010, supports Breast Cancer and All Cancer survivors through group activities and exercise, including workouts on Spa Creek four-five times per week in our two boats. We participate in Dragon Boat competitions along the east coast, many designed solely for Breast Cancer survivors. Training in Dragon Boats has been proven to be therapeutic for Breast Cancer survivors, helping to stave off or lessen the discomfort of lymphedema, a condition that often results after breast surgery. The foundation appeals to and encourages survivors to join the foundation as an alternative, or in addition to, traditional cancer support groups. The Foundation is run by an all volunteer group of women and men who care deeply about the mission of this organization and give their time to support the operations of the foundation as well as outreach activities in the community. Funds are needed for the rent of the dock facility and maintenance of the Dragon Boats used by the Foundation. Funds are needed to cover the cost of the Foundation's materials and literature included in the gift bags provided by the Anne Arundel Medical Center SOS (Survivors Offering Support) program to newly diagnosed Breast Cancer patients at local hospitals; many of our members are SOS volunteers as well. Funds are needed to offer scholarships to those who can't afford our minimal annual membership fee. Funds are needed to keep that membership fee low. The Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation offers the unique experience for those struggling to return to a normal life after a Breast Cancer diagnosis by learning to paddle for health, strength and mental well being in a Dragon Boat with 21 other persons who have survived the same battle. For those few who are unfortunate to have cancer re occurrences or other challenges, our members surround the patient and family with love, offering meals, rides to appointments, child care, and companionship. Our members range in age from 28 to 81. All are welcome, all are supported.
