Mission Statement
We endeavor to ignite, empower and transform people traditionally labeled “at-risk” into social entrepreneurs, engineers, and global leaders through our innovative, holistic and progressive human development school model.
About This Cause
Ember Charter School for Mindful Education, Innovation and Transformation (Ember) is a K-12 public charter school that serves over 400 students in Bedford Stuyvesant and Central Brooklyn, NY. Our mission is to ignite, empower, and transform young people of great promise traditionally labeled “at-risk” and who have access to the least economic resources, into social entrepreneurs, engineers, and global leaders through our innovative, holistic, and progressive human development school model. We focus on serving low-income inner city children who are ensnared in generational poverty and routinely exposed to systemic racism and the trauma often attended with their home-life experiences. We use our Teaching Firm, a unique teacher-led organizational model, to be serve as a fun, holistic, ‘college-successful’, career-ready, community-centered, culturally rich and relevant incubator of exceptional human potential where we spark, nurture and unleash mindful people empowered to affect positive change in the communities we serve. At Ember students are the foundation of our school's core human development practice, an endeavor to cast aside the typical focus on test prep and draconian 'no-excuses' policies in favor of a progressive, holistic and trauma responsive public school experience where agency, love, culture and a commitment to social justice sit at the center of our work. On the surface outsiders might see our students as 'victims' of the harsh statistical reality of their community, ensnared in generation poverty, marginalized by racism and beset by deep and pervasive trauma--yet despite the truth of this data, in reality our students are strong, determined and loving paladins of their own lives, capable of achieving the extraordinary when empowered with the tools and opportunity to do so. We endeavor to empower our students by focusing on the kind of good and impactful people they will become (social entrepreneurs, engineers and global leaders), not how many facts they can memorize and repeat. We nurture their self-efficacy, mindfulness, critical thinking, social-emotional health, physical well-being, and leadership to prepare them to change the world in every way their communities and our global society needs.
