Mission Statement
Open Door Youth Services exists to respond to the needs and promote the healthy development of vulnerable children and youth.
About This Cause
Open Door Youth Services (ODYS) began as a 10 bed youth shelter opened to address what members of the community saw as a need for an alternative to detention for children. Founding board members obtained grant funding for the initial operating expenses and bedrooms were individually sponsored by various area churches. In 1993, the shelter merged with New Directions, Floyd County’s Youth Service Bureau at that time. A program started by the county prosecutor’s office, New Directions is an after school program for elementary aged children that focuses on character development and early prevention. In 2003, the residential program added capacity and now has 16 beds available to children who have been abused or neglected, or who have committed a status offense. The residential program serves more than 100 children per year and New Directions has approximately 80 participants a year, many of whom have remained in the program for several years. Residential program participants come from numerous counties, but most often from Floyd, Clark, Scott, Washington, and Harrison counties. In subsequent years, ODYS has added organizational capacity and programs. A full time position (Community Liaison) was established to perform development functions, because although ODYS is operated under the auspices of Floyd County government, specifically Circuit Court, it is completely self-supporting. In 2007 ODYS became a provider for Diagnostic and Evaluation Services. In 2015, ODYS began providing child sexual abuse prevention education to all preschool through third grade students in Clark and Floyd Counties. In 2012, The Youth Services Bureau moved to a renovated location at 2524 Corydon Pike in New Albany, and used that as an opportunity to develop its brand, subsequently changing the name to Open Door Youth Services. As part of Strategic Planning, the Advisory Board believed this name was descriptive of all prevention, outreach, and residential efforts to help vulnerable children and youth.
