Mission Statement
Empower highly talented PA high-school students to pursue lifelong STEM endeavors inspired by a rigorous academic summer program that nurtures scientific thinking, scholarly collaboration, and interpersonal connections.
About This Cause
Our mission is to support the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS), and it's alumni. PGSS was started in 1982 by the State Department of Education as an opportunity for PA's most gifted high school students to learn about science and mathematics at a college level. The program, held every July on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, consists of courses in physics, biology, chemistry, computer science and mathematics. Students also take elective courses, a laboratory in one of the core fields, and participate in team research projects. The program culminates in a two day symposium where the students present the findings of their research, which they also publish in the Journal of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences. In addition to academics, students live on campus and learn to associate with their intellectual and social peers, go on field trips and participate in numerous social activities. Many alumni consider PGSS one of the most rewarding and enriching experience of their life. PGSS Campaign, Inc. provides financial support for the program with money raised from alumni, parents, faculty and friends. We also receive support from the corporate community and local foundations. In addition to supporting the program, PGSS Campaign, Inc. organizes alumni reunions, and runs a mentoring program, pairing up recent attendees of the school with an alumni mentor who provides career and college selection advice. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and all funds are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
