Mission Statement
Homeless Youth Connection’s mission is to eliminate barriers to education so that youth experiencing homelessness can graduate and create lasting solutions for a successful future.
About This Cause
Homeless Youth Connection (HYC) serves youth ages 13 to 21 who are experiencing homelessness and enrolled in school. HYC partners with 130 high schools and colleges in Maricopa County and Flagstaff and serves 700 homeless youth annually. The Arizona Department of Education reported more than 8,700 homeless youth in 9th-12th grade live in Arizona, and more than 1,100 are unaccompanied youth. These youth face numerous educational barriers, keeping many of them from completing high school or achieving post-secondary education. They are not part of the child welfare system and do not ask for help. Homeless youth are identified by their teachers, counselors, and coaches. HYC’s EYFTF program is a comprehensive social services program that engages high-school-age youth experiencing homelessness in trauma-informed, client-led, strengths-based interventions. Youth coaches work with youth to identify needs related to academics, health, housing, hygiene, employment, and independent living skills. The youth then identify their strengths and goals and partner with the youth coach to establish a plan to meet those needs and goals. HYC believes youth will succeed and reach their highest potential through authentic youth engagement and positive youth development. All services are free to the youth, high school, school district, or state. Program success is measured by the number of youth who complete the school year, increase independent living skills, establish a plan for after high school, and have a healthy support network.
