Mission Statement
Girls on the Run is MORE THAN A RUNNING PROGRAM. We are an after-school youth development program that inspires girls in 3rd-8th grades to be joyful, healthy and confident through fun running games & activities creatively integrated with the power of running.
About This Cause
Girls on the Run of the North State is a local, independent council of Girls On The Run International. Through an evidence-based curriculum that empowers and builds confidence at an early age (grades 3 through 8), Girls on the Run is committed to improving the lives, opportunities and futures of girls in our community in order to prevent at-risk behaviors in the future. We do this by inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our after-school programs combine training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education to equip pre-teen girls (3rd-8th grades) with the tools to make healthy decisions, form positive self-images and develop healthy, confident lifestyles. The accomplishment of training for and running the “graduation” 5k establishes an appreciation of health and fitness as well as confidence through accomplishment. During each season every team also plans and implements a community service project. This activity creates an experience of giving back and helps them build a strong connection to their community. The true success of the program is illustrated by what we hear back from the girls who have participated and their parents: "It has opened a window of confidence she had a hard time finding before." - Parent of an 8 year old GOTR Girl "Girls on the Run could make any girl fearless, because when you're surrounded by people you trust, respect and care for, nothing can hold you back from being the most beautiful person you have grown to be." – Josie, Middle School Participant “I've never seen “Susie” grow so much in a positive way as I did when she ran last season. Her confidence was at the highest, her wanting healthy foods, wanting to run on weekends with me. Her school enthusiasm. She got up & gave a speech in front of the whole school. Those are all things you can't just tell them to do, they have to feel it & want it. It was the most growth I've seen in her in two years.” - Parent of a GOTR Girl Girls on the Run of the North State started in Butte County in 2010. Its growth has been exponential, serving more than 5,000 girls in the years since. Our programs are well received by administration, parents and girls on more than 70 campuses throughout the North State. Communities (Schools, youth centers, parks) in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity and Yuba counties are eligible to host programs through GOTR North State.
