HelpMeSee's mission is to eliminate treatable blindness worldwide by training ophthalmologists and eye care specialists worldwide. We have a vision to be global leaders in developing and deploying scalable surgical simulation technology.
About This Cause
HelpMeSee is a global nonprofit organization with a mission to restore vision to people living with severe visual impairment and blindness due to cataracts. Worldwide over 100M people suffer from blindness or impaired vision due to cataract. In less than thirty minutes, cataract can be cured surgically by removing the cloudy lens and its replacement with clear artificial Intra Ocular Lens (IOL). Despite this fix, this disability condemns millions of people to a life of blindness because of lack of access to care. In a survey of 194 countries, fourteen countries had 100 ophthalmologists per million population (Resnikoff, 2020). This highly skewed distribution underscores the severity and shortage of skilled surgeons in many countries which translates to a disproportionate burden of blindness driving a much greater need for care. Indeed, in some countries e.g. The Gambia, Liberia, Niger, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Angola, Burundi, and others, nurses are authorized to provide cataract surgical care. Since surgery mentors are hard to find, technology can make such a huge difference. HelpMeSee has Innovation at the core of its strategy to provide standardized training led by certified instructors and adopted a data driven competency based surgical education delivery model that provides accelerated training for cataract specialists. In partnership with universities and hospitals that support learner transition from simulation to live surgery, HelpMeSee ensures that these surgeons have necessary skills to provide high quality care for their patients. HelpMeSee has developed surgical simulation technology, eBook, eLearning, and curriculum design in-house. Our high-fidelity virtual reality Eye surgery utilizes the most cutting-edge soft tissue modeling algorithms and graphics design that leverage physically based rendering and provides one of the most life-like surgical experiences to the user including a haptic feel sensitivity of micrograms of pressure, as is true for eye surgery. In our own facilities, and in partnership with prestigious Ophthalmic Institutions, HelpMeSee Simulation-based training is available in 11 cities: USA: Jersey City, NJ, Mexico: Queretaro, Madagascar: Antananarivo, France: Strasbourg, India: Mumbai, Madurai, & Hyderabad and China: Beijing, Wenzhou, Shenyang & Guangzhou. The long-term goal of HelpMeSee is to improve our humanitarian impact and increase training deployment in underserved communities across multiple continents. We have delivered over 3000 individual training courses to ophthalmologists and residents (2020-2023) and will continue to train many more.
