Mission Statement
The Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) produces independent, multidisciplinary research to advance the health and wellbeing of human populations around the world.
About This Cause
CDDEP was founded with the objective of using research to support better decision-making in health policy. CDDEP researchers employ a range of expertise—including economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, risk analysis, and statistics—to conduct actionable, policy-oriented research on malaria, antibiotic resistance, disease control priorities, environmental health, alcohol and tobacco, and other global health issues. CDDEP projects are global in scope, spanning Africa, Asia, and North America and include scientific studies and policy engagement. The CDDEP team is experienced in addressing country-specific and regional issues, as well as the local and global aspects of global challenges, such as antibiotic resistance and pandemic influenza. CDDEP research is notable for innovative approaches to design and analysis, which are shared widely through publications, presentations and web-based programs. CDDEP has offices in Washington, D.C. and New Delhi, India and relies on a distinguished team of scientists, public health experts, and economists around the world. CDDEP New Delhi has been appointed a World Health Organization Collaborating Center (WHO CC) for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This will involve the following scheme of work to support WHO activities to combat AMR worldwide. 1 – Supporting action in WHO Member States to implement national action plans (NAPs) to combat antimicrobial resistance by providing a country AMR snapshot AMR is a growing threat to human health. Since the adoption of the Global Action Plan on AMR, 81 low-and middle-income countries have developed national action plans; The challenge now is to implement these plans. Countries face many obstacles to implementation, including the lack of good local data to support decision making and resource allocation. CDDEP will provide a synthesis of country-specific AMR data and priority actions to combat AMR to the WHO country office. This will take the form of information briefs tailored to the country context. This will directly support the work of the AMR coordination committee and national government. 2 – Support action at WHO regional level by providing a regional AMR snapshot every two years. CDDEP will assemble a regional AMR snapshot every two years which will directly contribute to the WHO headquarters global report on progress in combatting AMR. This will involve the analysis and reporting of global progress on antimicrobial resistance, as monitored by WHO, FAO, and OIE. In addition, CDDEP will synthesise available data for two regions once every two years which will then be vetted by WHO regional offices. 3 – Develop the economic rationale to enable individual countries to make the case for investing in addressing AMR. The economic case for investing in addressing AMR is currently lacking in many countries. CDDEP will develop the economic case for investing in addressing AMR in 1-2 countries. This will involve working with WHO headquarters to identify these countries and the data required. At the end of the initial 2-year period CDDEP, with WHO, will identify the way forward for further economic casework by country.
