Mission Statement
Food for His Children seeks to empower and equip individuals and communities to become all they were created to be and teach others to do the same. We serve the materially poor in rural Karatu, Tanzania, walking alongside them as they learn to appreciate their assets and resources. Our vision is to eradicate extreme poverty, one family, one dairy goat at a time. Learn more about Food for Hi Children at https://youtu.be/iLOLzSnRpKs We seek to unleash potential in rural Tanzanian so families and communities can thrive. We believe sustainable development is crucial to poverty alleviation and that people prosper when they are not dependent on others. We believe in teaching people to solve their own problems instead of solving them for them and walking alongside people, doing this with them instead of for them. We believe poverty is rooted in broken relationships. When these relationships are restored, individuals and communities thrive. We believe families and communities thrive when members know their gifts and talents and use them for the good of the community. Our vision is to provide sustainable community development to transforms generations in Tanzania. • $45 covers all service for one month for one family • $60 covers FFHC services for a year for one child • $5 covers services for a month for one child • $200 covers a month of case management services for 40 families • $250 provides things like a dairy goat, training and vet services to one family Our Approach: We start with a goat Why community development and not just relief? Simple. Relief, though temporarily helpful, is a quick-fix. Community development addresses the root of the problem, while fostering empowerment and transforming lives. We start with one materially-poor family. We provide them a dairy goat along with veterinary support and training in animal husbandry, agriculture, leadership, entrepreneurship, savings, health and environment. We provide veterinary care, pastoral care, goal planning and one on one support and encouragement.
About This Cause
Since 2008, Food for His Children (FFHC) has provided community development and humanitarian services to families and communities in rural Karatu, Tanzania, targeting those with income below $1 per day. Our vision is to eradicate extreme poverty so that children and families have food to eat, medical care, education and the ability to work towards their dreams and that families and communities are able to sustain themselves without relying on outside resources. We do this by providing a micro loan of a dairy goat, training in animal husbandry, agriculture, health, environment, leadership, savings, and entrepreneurship; one on one case management and coaching, goal planning, holistic support and veterinary care services. Food for His Children works in over 40 sub villages in Karatu District serving 374 families. Meet Bernadetta Bernadetta felt like a nobody. Abandoned by her husband because she gave birth to six daughters and no sons, she was socially outcast. But Bernadetta was an excellent farmer. She started with one goat, providing it with food and shelter. The goat returned the favor by providing rich milk. Soon, Bernadetta had an entire goat farm on her property. Selling ten of them to pay tuition for her daughters’ schooling, she became empowered, knowing that she could stand on her own two feet and provide for her family. Watch Bernadetta's story here https://youtu.be/AaMM1_6JXbc Meet Esta. Esta is a mother of 7, a goat farmer and a dreamer. In 2009, Esta received her first goat. From that day on, her life changed. By selling goat milk and goat offspring, she can afford to send her kids to school, she started a chicken business and built a shop and a brick home is underway. She is making dreams come true. God is on the move! Invite, equip, deploy Guided by faith and scripture, we partner with local village and church leaders to do three things: invite, equip, deploy. Invite We start each mission by meeting with local village and church leaders in rural Tanzania. We focus on the assets of the community and learn about the strengths and goals of the people who live there. What do they envision for their future? What are the immediate needs for their people? How can we best help? We then invite the community to join us on a journey of transformation. Equip Once we learn how we can best help a community, we get to work. Oftentimes, the most effective way we can empower is through sustainable goat farming. While the goat provides literal sustenance, with the help of the Gospel, we provide spiritual sustenance. Through both components, recipients undergo a transformation, gaining confidence, faith and self-esteem. Besides equipping families, we also help prepare leaders and volunteers. We seek those excited and passionate about our mission and teach them the skills needed to empower families in need. We seek those who are: Faithful, Accountable, Teachable, Trainers (FATT). Deploy What begins with one goat farm soon blossoms into a community of sustainable goat farms. We see entire villages empowering each other to live out their gifts and passions. They’re able to care for themselves and each other in ways that honor and glorify God. Discipleship for Development Food For His Children follows the Discipleship for Development® Program, a ministry that helps people in communities become all God intends for them to be. Experienced leaders help people of a community grow in their ability to problem-solve, take control of their lives and imitate this process for others. Through this ministry, individuals and entire communities are transformed. Embarking on the journey together We begin this transformational journey by meeting our families exactly where and as they are. We walk alongside them, providing farm education, veterinary skills and spiritual guidance based on biblical values. Our Families To be eligible to receive goats, families must prepare a goat shed, ensuring the animals will be well taken care of. A goat shed must follow specific requirements, including good ventilation, a roof that provides protection from rain and means to clean water and food. Training varies according to the season. It consists of: •Goat shed preparations •Planting seeds that will provide food for goats •Veterinary skills and education, provided by our team of specialists Providing resources to enable success How will we know if we’ve been successful? Our vision goes far beyond goat farming. Here’s what we see: •Churches filled with people who know the Lord in a personal way and are living as Christ would •Small groups that pray together, share in their faith journey and study the Bible to gain a closer relationship with God and each other •Communities empowering each other to live out their gifts and passions. In the process, we hope to see individuals, families and communities becoming all God created them to be. •Families that can provide for their family, send children to school and pay for expenses like medical bills •Communities that support each other in times of need •Communities teaching other villages what they have learned •Communities solving issues and providing solutions independently Farm and development center The goal of this project is to develop a farm that facilitates the work of Food For His Children. The Food for His Children Farm and Innovation Center will equip Tanzanian communities to overcome issues that cause extreme poverty. It’s a unique combination of farming, innovation and tourism, providing sustainable income for the community development work that unleashes the potential of thousands of Tanzanians living in extreme poverty. Our vision •A local store will provide an outlet for FFHC to sell products produced on the farm •A training center will allow FFHC to offer hands-on education to program recipients and community members. Agricultural skills classes like tending crops, water harvesting and purification, animal husbandry and making and using goat products will be taught at the center •A coffeehouse, housing an internet cafe and cultural exhibits, will provide a local source of funds to sustain the farm’s operations •A farm will reduce the expense of purchasing goats for new families and ensure a pure bred of dairy goats by breeding them on-site
