ADAM'S PLACE, A Grief Center for Children and Families

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, 89106-3800 United States

Mission Statement

Adam's Place has been serving the Las Vegas community for 5 years. We are a 501 c 3 charitable organization that provides age segmented peer support groups (3-7, 8-12 and 13-18 years of age), as well as adult family members coping with the loss of a loved one, parent, sibling or guardian.. We offer group sessions every other week on Tuesday and Wednesday and provide a light meal before each session. We are members of the National Alliance of Grieving Children and have adopted their best practices. Our facilitators and staff are all volunteers dedicated to providing the highest level of service to the children and their families.

About This Cause

Located in the heart of the medical district in Las Vegas, Adam's Place grew and continues to grow to meet a preventative mental health need for children and teens in Southern Nevada suffering from loss and grief. Our home like setting is based in the intersection of 4 of the poorest socio-economic zip codes in the valley. The hope, healing and resources it provides is a beacon for children and teens whose lives have been profoundly disrupted by the loss of a parent, sibling or guardian.Research indicates that children are not as resilient as once believed and that children who do not receive support within the first year after a loss are at a higher risk to have behavior, school attendance and relationship problems. Often children are mislabeled as having ADD and do not receive the help they really need. Very often these children are trying to support the surviving parent and not given a chance to learn to cope with their own feelings of loss. Many children are bullied and do not feel "normal" and too often they cannot find other children to connect with that may have suffered a similar loss. Adam's Place is a safe, confidential environment, with well trained volunteer facilitators who help the groups connect, express and support one another. The program is open ended and children may opt out after 6 to 8 weeks knowing they can return at any time when they face a re-grief moment or a developmental milestone without a parent. Others stay for several months and even return year after year for the support. Many of our referrals come from teachers and counselors at the local schools who are not equipped to handle the seriousness of this condition. Additional referrals come from trauma intervention specialist not equipped to provide long term guidance for these affected children. Childhood grief is a very real and sometimes debilitating condition that can affect children of all ages in very different ways and it is through the generous support we receive from organizations and the community that allows us to continue our mission. There is no shortage of children suffering with grief and there are few organizations dedicated to providing the support and caring that we do at Adam's Place. We hope that you will join us in our mission to help children fulfill their hopes and dreams and rise above the dark side of loss and into the light of a caring and a connected community. Thank you, on behalf of the children and volunteers at Adam's Place, for your support.
