Mission Statement
At Earth Innovation Institute, we foster this transition to low-emission rural development – a shift to economic growth that keeps forests and fisheries intact and rewards farmers, ranchers, and fishermen for using sustainable practices.
About This Cause
WHO WE ARE Founded in 2010 in California, we are a science-based, nonprofit organization that builds and implements strategies for conserving tropical forests and fisheries, solving climate change, and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. Our Mission: We advance climate-friendly rural development through innovative approaches to sustainable farming, forestry and fisheries in tropical regions around the world. Where We Work: With our headquarters in San Francisco, regional offices in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Peru, and partnerships in Mexico, Kenya, China and the EU, we advance our mission through a global staff of 25 seasoned experts and a network of strategic collaborations with governments, companies, non-profits, and farm and fisheries sector organizations. Why We Focus On The Tropics: The tropical forest regions of the world hold the key to solving climate change, avoiding global food shortages, and reducing species extinctions. One fourth of the total reduction in carbon emissions needed globally by 2030 to avoid dangerous climate change could be achieved by slowing the loss of tropical forests and speeding their recovery. WHAT WE DO Regional low-carbon development strategies: We catalyze the development of bold regional strategies and public policies to conserve tropical forests and fisheries, enhance rural livelihoods, and produce more food. Our main partner in this work is the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF), a network of 38 states and provinces dedicated to low-carbon development in the tropics. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities: We support innovative partnerships between forest communities and their local governments to secure land rights and improve livelihoods through the GCF Working Group for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. Amazon Fisheries: We support the sustainable development of the Amazon’s highly productive fisheries through community management of floodplain lakes and development of sustainable aquaculture. Greening Corporations: We facilitate partnerships for sustainability between tropical forest governments and companies that buy soybeans, palm oil, beef, timber and other commodities produced in their region through our online green development platforms, GCFimpact.org and produceprotectplatform.com. Market Transformation in China, the EU and California: We are also supporting the transformation of giant Chinese and EU markets for sustainably-produced commodities from tropical forest regions, as we support the launch of the first regulated market for tropical forest conservation in California. Research: Recent papers include: a deep assessment of how the 70% decline in Amazon deforestation was achieved (Nepstad et al. 2014, Science); and the first global analysis of low-carbon development strategies across all GCF members (EII with CIFOR, forthcoming).
