About This Cause

Do you know someone facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis? Here is how the Tucson Cancer Conquerors can help... Peer Support: Whether you are newly diagnosed or just need help moving forward after treatment, Tucson Cancer Conquerors provides peer-to-peer support from survivors who understand what you are experiencing because they’ve personally been there. Survivor support means we are available to listen, share helpful information and resources, and provide encouragement. These meaningful friendships are an important source of ongoing strength and support, long after treatments. Exercise: Our GetFit exercise classes are led by certified personal trainers in the beautiful outdoor setting of Brandi Fenton Park. GetFit is suitable for all fitness levels and addresses special considerations unique to cancer survivors. Each session provides individualized exercise modifications to accommodate physical limitations or concerns with an added emphasis on flexibility, balance, and weight-bearing exercises to improve muscle and bone strength made vulnerable by cancer treatment. With the addition of our walking and hiking groups we have something for everyone. Regular physical activity relieves stress and anxiety, fights fatigue, improves sleep, and strengthens the immune system. Everyone benefits from exercise, even (and especially) during cancer treatment. Nutrition: Recognizing the powerful health benefits of good nutrition, the Cancer Conquerors plant, tend and harvest our very own organic garden. While we nourish our bodies with the healthy food we grow, it’s the physical act of gardening that reduces stress, strengthens the heart and hands, regulates the immune system and benefits our overall sense of well-being. Not only will our garden committee show you how its done, with the help of our local chef you will learn how to create something healthy AND delicious! Stress Management : Mindfulness is the focus of one’s energy and attention on the here and now, savoring life’s present experience with a greater sense of peace and gratitude. Instead of replaying the difficulties of yesterday and worrying about the challenges of tomorrow, mindfulness allows us to truly appreciate the gift that is today. Our Meditative Walks in the outdoor tranquility of Arizona’s beautiful Sonoran desert are rooted in mindfulness and encourage us to take quiet, healing moments for ourselves. Visual imagery, word affirmations and an awareness of the five senses purposefully anchor us to the present moment and inspire a positive, healthy approach to daily living. Social support: Laughter truly is the best medicine and we are always up for fun. Monthly birthday dinner celebrations, local entertainment events, and ‘about town’ networking lunches offer comradery and fellowship in a relaxing social environment. Family and friends are welcome to join us on our many adventures, exploring local desert trails on guided hikes and participating in community events to support other organizations serving cancer survivors and their families. Wellness Retreats: Our social committee selects a new venue every year and creates an unforgettable weekend experience that includes lodging, meals, transportation, guided activities, educational workshops and evening entertainment. This exciting road trip is a member favorite, providing respite from life’s daily demands and offering a one-of-a-kind experience to those who are looking to rejuvenate body, mind and spirit. Community Resources: The Resource Room, located in Pima County’s Brandi Fenton Park Visitor’s Center, is open to all members during Cancer Conqueror events and activities. Whether it’s relaxing with friends on a comfortable sofa over a cup of coffee, attending a lecture, or reading one of the many books available in our free lending library, the TCC Resource Room is a great place to spend time with friends. Education and networking: For nearly ten years, rain or shine, we have gathered at the Brandi Fenton Park Visitor’s Center following our Saturday morning workout for what has become known as the Coffee Café. Even if you don’t attend our GetFit class, the Coffee Café is a great way to start your day and share a snack, socialize, meet new members, and hear about upcoming activities. We also host special guests and provide informational workshops on topics suggested by members. Stop in and say hello—there’s a mug with your name on it. Really. We have our own mugs. Visit Us: Please visit us at www.YouCanConquer.org to explore the many activities and support programs offered by the Tucson Cancer Conquerors.
